Need help choosing card for eyefinity..

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I currently have 3 1920x1080 monitors and im planning to do eyefinity. I have a Palit gtx 570 sonic platinum with me now. And I'm thinking if it would be much better to sell it and buy a 7970. If I would sli the gtx 570, isn't the 6970s scale much better? Thanks. I have about $300-350 to spend.

I would just SLI the 570's as long as they have decent VRAM (1.5GB+). That'll get you better than 7970 performance.

Personally for myself, I would sell the 570 and buy a 7970. Does great for Eyefinity by itself. Buying a 570 is not a bad idea either if you prefer to use dual GPUs.
I strongly recommend that you follow your 1st thought wink.gif

A GTX 570 is more or less equal to 6970 subject to games settings.

Just a heads up, if you choose a 6970 or 7970, to setup Eyefinity one of your monitors must have native DisplayPort or you will need to buy an Active Adapter around $28.

For 3x1920x1080, the amount of 1.25GB VRAM of your Palit GTX570 Sonic is only a bare minimum. At this entry level amount, you will have to lower some settings and do tweakings in order to play games smoothly. It is not the GPU core rendering power but the amount of VRAM that forms the limit at this ultra high resolution.

I suggest 2GB per GPU core as a good amount. 3GB VRAM of a HD7970 certainly works good. But it will cost US$500-550 at launch which exceeds your budget of $300-350.

HD6950 2GB costs around US$230 and HD6970 2GB costs around US$300. So, you can buy one of the these cards and later buy another to crossfire when more money is available.

However, if you also use the money, say around $250, from selling the Palit GTX570, then you will have a budget total of $550-600. You can then have two HD6970s which will be more suitable than a single HD7970 for 3x1920x1080, IMHO.

is it better to go crossfire on the 6970s than single 7970? i'll be selling my gtx 570 for about $300. and then i have an additional $250-$300. should i buy 2 6970s or single 7970? which is better in the long run, i mean future proofing my system?

A single 7970 will not out perform 2x 6950/70 for almost cost the same. If you plan to go higher resolution than 1080 or going Eyefinity, the 7970 3GB is a solid choice and crossfire it down the road.
