Can I switch HDD from IDE to AHCI without losing data?

Thread Starter
Hello all,
I have a motherboard that can run either IDE mode or AHCI at one time for all SATA controllers, but my new SSD needs to be in AHCI mode to work. However, my HDD was installed with IDE mode on, so if I do that "switch" explained in Sean's SSD guide to switch to AHCI mode from IDE mode, will I lose any of my data on my hard drive?

No.
If you are installing W7 on the SSD you won't have to do anything other than switch the BIOS mode from IDE to SATA.

If you still plan on using your HDD for your OS, use this:

Also, an SSD will work in IDE mode, however you will lose functionality such as TRIM and likely will observe a vast speed decrease.
