Lets do some fact finding. Next on nvidias roadmap is a fermi refresh, yes, another fermi refresh. That isn't in prototype status yet, nobody knows the relase date.

Kepler is Q2 late or Q3 fiscal 2012. AMD is doing a tahiti refresh with higher clock speeds and better TDP, but the kepler just recently taped out and is not in prototype status. If you think Kepler is just around the corner, i'm afraid that just doesn't appear to be the case with no working prototype. Maybe nvidia can pull a miracle off, but with their large complex die strategy a late release is to be expected. Now if something amazing happens and the kepler is released in June, rest assured i'll be first in line to buy it -- it just doesn't appear that way smile.gif

Yeah. I'm rooting for AMD because I like rooting for the underdog tongue.gif I do this for sports too frown.gif

and nvidias release whenever they do finally get around to it will be newer technology and you can argue that? the cycle just keeps going and going. But this thread is about AMD breaking records with their new flagship (until 7990) so give them some credit when credit is due. and believe me IT IS DUE!!

You have a pretty strong opinion, considering you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. The 780 could be performing worse than the 580, for all you know.

If AMD is placing this card (price wise) in the top tier of single GPU cards, they probably don't anticipate being "bulldozed" or "piledriven" by nV's upcoming flagship. Just a heads-up, they probably have a better idea of what's coming over the horizon than you do.
AMD has a 6990 to nV's 590, a 6970 to the 570, a 1GB 6950 to the 560ti, and so on. AMD missed out in the super high end market the last few generations, and this is them deciding to pursue it.
Dollar for dollar, AMD is historically on better. There's a difference between not doing something, and not being able to do something. Don't fool yourself into believing AMD can not compete in the "Fermi tier" market; if they couldn't, this GPU wouldn't be selling for $549.

The best assumption to be made here is that AMD will be a slightly better value pricewise, and offer better high resolution performance, but weaker performance with heavy AA, That's been true of many generations up to now.

If it broke the world record at stock without breaking a sweat.. I wonder what'll happen with a proper aftermarket cooler and a little higher voltage.

I thought the 7xx series by Nvidia was only going to be a refresh?
Similar to AMDs HD5000 to HD6000 series, only a slightly better jump in performance.

I wouldn't get too hyped up about the 7xx series.

Don't set your expectations too high. Many here did with the 79xx and were disappointed because it didn't offer 100% increase over the 580 rolleyes.gif

Yes but when the 780 comes out everyone will be wondering how bad the 8xxx series AMD cards will beat those. If AMD and Nvidia continue to release their cards 6 months apart from each other, every year, there really won't be generations of cards to compare anymore. Whereas the 4xxx series lined up with the 2xx series, since then they have been 6 months apart usually and everyone continues to ask the question that you have, every time a new series comes out.
