Need Help Choosing a New Component!

Thread Starter
Hello, I am planning to purchase a new $600-ish component spring 2012. Currently, I'm looking at either getting the new 3930K and whichever ROG ASUS motherboard I can afford, a FX-8150 and the crosshair IV (I think), or a 7990 and just sticking with my current cpu/mobo. The question is, which purchase would provide me with the biggest upgrade given that I will mainly use my computer for gaming in eyefinity and multitasking (a lot of alt+tabbing and 100+ tabs on firefox). Please help! Thanks!

The best increase in FPS will come from the 7990. Over clock your 965BE and enjoy. It might have a bottleneck, but up the Quality settings and dont worry about it.

I think the 6990 will likely be in the order of $800 USD or so but even the 7970 will be quicker than your two 5770's which you could sell and put towards either the GPU or something else like an SSD

This.
Make an ebay account, sell the two 5770's soon. Then buy 7950/7970. Keep the rest for an SSD/CPU upgrade later on. Or get a 1100T if you wish.

I was also leaning towards the 7990, however since my cpu is capped at 4Mhz (hard to get any higher because it's C2) how bad would the bottleneck be? Also aren't 1100Ts discontinued? I would love to pick one up because of my older CPU doesn't really take full advantage of my new water cooling system.. But is the extra ~$200 worth it? Maybe a bulldozer instead? I have seen A LOT of mixed reviews on it and I'm leaning more towards the side that suggests a sandy-bridge chip instead of getting the new chip.. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Or maybe wait for this new "Piledriver" I just found out about.. Too many options haha. tongue.gif

With the 7990, the 965 @ 4Ghz wouldn't give a very significant bottleneck. Probably 10%, worst case scenario.

The 1100T is discontinued, not this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849

Well, I have a nearby microcenter that has the 1100T in stock (luckily). Question is... Under watercooling what is it's oc potential? And is it enough of an upgrade to replace my 965 C2 in terms of gaming performance? Thanks!

Quite frankly, as far as gaming goes, you will not see a boost in frames since there are barely any games that make use of 4 threads, let alone 6. Where the X6 would make sense is in an Xfire/SLI setup, if you encode/stream/convert and if you want a higher stable OC, since it would be a C3 rev chip. Make your choice depending on what you want out of the processor mate.

Under watercooling, you should get as high as 4.2-4.3Ghz.

I see.. Well thanks for the info! I will most likely be getting the 7990 in the spring time and will think over if the higher OC is worth the $200.
