Hardware Concerns

Thread Starter
I am building a pretty cheap computer to practice overclocking on but i have a few questions that i just can't find the answers to.

1. I am stripping the 2x512s from my old sytem for this rig, will this become a problem when I upgrade the RAM in the future?

2. Is there any way to effectively cool SLI cards that are overclocked without watercooling?

3. If I am transferring my current window formated hard drive to my new computer, will I have to reformat it or will it work fine or what?

4. Can I use my compaq windows xp recovery cds on the new computer or do i have to buy an new copy of XP?

5. How do i remove the thermal compound from my CPU so i can apply arctic silver?

6. I have a 500W antec PSU with modular cabling but every once in a while, I hear that modular PSUs are unstable or something. Is this true?

All help and recomendations will be much appreciated!

Use isopropyl alcohol and a few cotton buds to clean it

1) Your RAM will be locked into its pin-type (DDR, DDR2) , There are upgrades for yours (DDR400 PC3200 ?)

2) Zalman VF900

3)You may have to call MS tech support, as I did, to obtain a new key.

4)You will be able to transfer at least twice (I have) But XP can only be on one system at a time (only if you want updates, and your'e not caught).

5) Xylene-based cleaner (Goof-Off) NO citrus/scented (Goo-Gone)...NO GOO-GONE!!

6) Modular PSU can have minor fluctuations. I'll post the link in a moment.

thanks for the article, the fluctuations arent too bad.
what im really wondering now is
1. do those zalmans fit on both of the cards? don't they blow hot air on the other card?
2. I am transferring the CPU, HD, DVD drive, RAM, and PSU to a new case and a new mobo. When I do this, can I just plug in the HD, turn it on, and all my data will still be there or do I have to wipe the disk.
3. I got one of those compaq branded recovery disks that they say should only be used with compaqs. Can I use this with the new mobo?

once again, i really appreciate the help

1) The VF900 is a fairly low-profile VGA cooler, both should fit, though you are accurate in the air-flow: the primary card will exhaust onto the back-side of the secondary card. I think that this is unavoidable. Maybe another member will have a tip to get around this.

2) You will be able to plug your HDD and go, though you may have to call MS to get a new activation key.

3) I'm not sure what disk you are refering to. Is it a Windows OS, or the crash recovery disk? It may have proprietary data on it that is not compatible with your new MoBo.... Note: This is just guess work, again: maybe someone with more software knowledge will be able to help.

Good Luck!
