Help upgrade my PC.

Hey guys!

I'm looking to upgrade my PC in the near future. I've been looking to upgrade my CPU for some time, but always had issues with financing. I was looking to jump up from the i7 950 to the i7 2600k but may have to settle for less. Couple of things to note...

1) I want to try to keep this around the $500 mark if possible.
2) I would like to upgrade the ram, and am thinking around the 12-16gb range.
3) I would like to upgrade to an 1155 chipset. I feel that there's not much leeway with the 1366 chipset as there used to be, and want to upgrade for this reason.

What should I start looking into? Would an i5 2500k (OC'd) be a good option, while retaining a fairly low price?
Price isn't too much of an issue, but the higher the cost the more I have to wait. I'm a bit impatient in this regard.

Whats wrong with the i7 950? You won't see any performance increase by switching to sandy bridge. Upgrade your GPU instead. Also 4gb is fine for any system, shouldn't need more than that.

Buy another 6970. Also overclock your 950, my 930 is at 4.2ghz and is running just fine and there isn't a difference between it and the new sandy's.

Buy another 6970.

4gb isn't enough for any system, actually. In my case, I've started doing a lot of digital art using a graphical tablet. I need to be able to operate on a 5000 pixel wide canvas smoothly, thus I need more RAM. I don't feel as though a second HD 6970 is going to help me as well. I can play the majority of games I own at 60fps, with or without tweaking. This upgrade is more for official stuff though. Video rendering, big digital art pieces, etc.

I Agree, a GPU Upgrade would provide more Benefit than switching sides., Although, In my own opinion, 8gb is quite useful in today's setting, but thats an argument for another thread. Maybe buy some decent monitors, headphones, speakers or maybe have lunch/dinner out at a nice place with someone with the money. Cause looking at your rig, You're set for awhile.

Well in that case, If you're really determined, go for it, Honestly, I'd go for more ram, possibly an IPS Monitor and even better gear or more Disk space?

You didn't mention that. The jump from the 950 to 2500k/2600k isn't worth it. If I was doing that kind of work I would either just add in more memory, OR get a 3930k 6 core.

The problem is that the current memory I have is causing a lot of BSOD's. It will need replacing but it has passed it's return date to the store, and an RMA is going to take far too long considering I live in Australia. For the price of new ram I could essentially purchase a new CPU, and from selling the current CPU/MoBo I could easily get the funding's for a new motherboard and ram.
