Revisiting a topic. 1GB vram enough? January 2012

So I'm looking to get a new video card. I really want to buy an unlocked HD 6950 2Gb, but is it really worth at least $90+ difference? How long would a 5870 1gb last me in 2012? Much cheaper and on par with the 6950-70.

EDIT: I am open to Nvidia cards too

Your card will last you as long as you want until you can't play your games at the settings you want or it dies...lol

1GB is fine until you go higher than 1080p or if the game has a ton of textures.

I'd wait for the 7 series to be released before purchasing anything, they will be out soon anyways.

Get 6950/70 2GB if you need more than 1GB VRAM and that will last you for a while with newer games.

Techpowerup reviewed the HD6950 2GB exactly one year ago. It showed that, on average of 16 games tested, HD5870 1GB trails HD6950 2GB by only 2% at 1680x1050 (native resolution of your Asus VK222H). At 2560x1600, the gap only grows to 4%.

While it is true that newer games will require more rendering power and VRAM, the historical trend is a very mild growth.  Only once in a while, one or two new games come out (eg Crysis, BF3) that require more video meory. But, overall speaking, I reckon your HD5870 1GB can still hold out in 2012.  If your resolution remains at 1680x1050, it can hold out strongly.

If you do want to make an upgrade, let me make a suggestion as I sense that your budget is not very liberal.  Perhaps consider adding another HD5870 1GB to crossfire with your current one. 1GB per GPU is fairly solid for 1680x1050.  And, second hand HD5870 1GB seems to go around US$80-90.

Check ebay US.  I see a number of used HD5870 in the sub US$100 range.  (Perhaps they are bogus?)

it all depends on the games. most games don't use 1gb of ram at 1080P but of course there are exceptions like BF3 and Crysis 2.

Shogun 2 uses over 1GB VRAM at 1080p and most settings on Ultra. Certain mods will also use over 1GB VRAM with 4xMSAA.

If you get painfully slow stuttering, chances are you are over the VRAM limit.

Ebay has them brand new for $167 shipped right now (buy it now price). That is where I ordered mine, it's on sale, usually it's $187.
