What kind of fan controller do I need for my case? 5 120mm fans + CPU Cooler

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
This is my first build where I'll really be measuring temperatures and overclocking so fan controllers are new territory for me. My case is a Fractal Design Define Mini and I'll be running 5 120mm case fans (two stock Fractal fans and 3 Gelid Solutions Silent fans, as well as the fan on the CM Hyper 212+.

So I'm wondering what kind of controller would work with my fans as well as fit in my case (I'm worried that the case door might not close all the way with some controllers). Should I get a controller that can handle 6 fans so that I can put the CPU cooler on it or would just a 5 fan controller be good? Thanks for any advice!

not sure how much space you have between door and the 5.25 slot.
i would recommend a NZXT Sentry.

http://www.nzxt.com/new/product.php?series=11

these are all flat and controllable via "touch", there is also an external version.
perhaps you like one of them

edit// or perhaps a scythe kazemaster, the height of the knobs are only 13mm

I like that NZXT controller - thanks for the suggestion!thumb.gif

I'm really wondering if I screwed up with my fan choice though... My Gelid Solutions Silent fans don't have PWM like these do - will my fans still work with a fan controller?

All my components have arrived (except the case and PSU - hopefully due tomorrow) so I'm hoping I don't have to replace them

nah everything is okay,
it doesnt matter which kind of fans you are controlling with a fan controller.
you control them by in-/decreasing the voltage

Whew, thank you! I was nervous there for a second - reps, bud.

edit: if I had bought PWM fans, though, I could have set up the fans change speed automatically thru the motherboard, right?

There's the Sunbeam Rheosmart -> http://www.xoxide.com/sunbeam-rheosmart-6-fan-controller.html

There's the Lamptron FC- 6 -> http://www.xoxide.com/lamptron-fc6-fan.html

Also, there are other Lamptron models which you can choose.

And if you have fans that you want to run at the same rpm given their postion, you can use a fan splitter -> http://www.xoxide.com/3pinsplitter.html

This isn't strictly true, I recently ended up with 4 Noiseblocker PK3s that hate being connected up to any fan controller. They don't function at all below 9V, and need the full12+ to function normally. I think its something to do with the current the fans need, and the way the fan controllers lower the voltage... or something, I'm no electritian...

Anyway, I tried the fans on the NZXT Sentry, and 2 Lamptron controllers, and both gave the exact same problem. Guess some fans just don't like controllers.

All this said, chances are you will be fine, as most fans aren't a pain in the *** like these PK3s tongue.gif

i'm not aware of any aftermarket fan controllers that control the PWM fans. generally you put the PWM fans on the mobo header and use the fan controller to control the 3 pin fans by varying voltages to the fan. PWM fan control speed by pulsing power to the fan, NOT varying voltage. (PWM stands for Pulse-Width Modulation) by turning the fan on and off very quickly, the PWM fan can be controlled very precisely to the exact RPM you want the fan to spin at.(which is not possible with voltage variation)

if you intend to put the fans on the mobo PWM header, then get PWM. if you want to hook it up onto the fan controller, then get the 3pin fans. do realize most mobo will not support fan header current of more then 1 amp(12 watt) so you cant just split the connecter and hook up multiple fans unless you get specialty spliters like these

get a lamptron controller they have very good quality

i only posted the sentry series products because of his rig. it has a door and i wasnt sure how much space the has to use other fan controllers with knobs instead of a touchpad.

also @psyclum i told him about the voltage tuning usied by a fan controller works with his pwm fans. not that pwm fans overall gets controlled by voltage.

i control different types of fans (pwm and 3pin) with my kazemaster, and got no problem at all. i can run them at 500 rpm perfectly which should be between 5V or 7V. i am using simple 3 pin y cable splitters to control the pwm fans also.

works like charm
