Seems like it could just end up hurting the Intel name.....
Hurting the Intel name? Joe user is like "OMG PENTIUM SUX I NEED KOR2".

That sells processors.

I think it makes sense. Joe User has the Pentium name drilled into his head from all the advertising done by Intel and OEM partners, such as Dell and HP, which advertise their computer with the "Intel Inside" logo. I even had someone ask if the reason his computer was so slow was because it didnt have a Pentium in it (which was half true, he had a 1.3 GHz VIA CPU, but he was complaining about his dial-up )

So, by keeping the Penium name alive for main-stream chips (a 1.6 GHz Conroe-based CPU with fly through any business or desktop aplications easaly), they dont have to get users use to a new name (*** is this Core 2 Duo thing?!), which will increase sales with out increased advertising.

Also, it alows the "Core 2 Duo" name to give bragging rights to people, as it will only be used in high-end desktop PCs. By braking up the naming (calling the low-end chips "Celeron", the mid-rang chips "Pentium" and the high-end chips "Core 2 Duo), they provide a way for users to better understand the diferance in CPU power, since clock speeds are so confusing, even to people like us at times, and remembering CPU model numbers is tedeose.

  • Core2 Processors that fail the 1066FSB.
  • Core2 Processors that fail the 800FSB.
  • Core2 Processors that fail the 2MB Cache.

This procedure has been followed by both AMD and Intel for some years now. The nomenclature is being resurrected, not the core chip architecture.

Everyones looking at this like some kind of Intel master plan. Cheaper processors are good! That not enough for you? Need to figure out some sort of complicated reason because your in disbelief?
