Maxtor SATA2 + nForce3 issues

Hello,

I'm having some problems with the HDD I've just bought. It's a maxtor SATA2 250Gb 16Mb buffer that I tried to install on my good old ASUS K8N (AMD, nF3 250). The thing is it does not work.
To save you some pointless effort this is what I've already tried:
- The mobo boots, I see the HDD in the BIOS, but upon booting Win XP it locks even if the win is on my Samsung PATA drive.
- I tried to install Win on it, but it locks also. I have good drivers and I pressed F6 and installed them. It locks when on the lower part of the screen it's written som' like "found 238Gb .....on nvata bus"
- Installed sucessfuly win on the HDD with an ATI mobo

While surfing the web I found that there may be incopatibilities between the Maxtor SATAs and the nF3/4.
Have you any ideas, 'cause I'm preety pissed off. And yes, I know that for 5$ more I could have had a WD...

Seems like you tried most options... can't think of much more. Drive works, mobo works... what else? Seems indeed a compatibility issue

Two things that come to mind: first, it's a SATA2 drive in a SATA1 mobo. This should normally work just fine, but maybe this Maxtor refuses to play nice? If the ATI is SATA1 also, then this argument does not fly.

I also found this on the Maxtor website:
http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/...tion-pin11.pdf

I assume you have the MaXLineIII, in which case the jumper blabla does not apply... however, you never know... check for any jumpers on the back of the drive.

You have the latest BIOS for the motherboard, I assume?

Yep, it's the latest BIOS. Actualy I wrote to Maxtor and it seems that all the Maxtor SATA2 have incompatibilities with the nForce3 and nForce4 chipsets. Anyway, the service has been really "on time", they've sent me a firmware update 2hours after I sent the email with my issue.

My advice: before buying nForce mobos and Maxtor HDDs check them for compatibility, or pay 5$ more an get a WD...
