changing motherboard

Thread Starter
I quickly ran a search and got varying answers on this; I'm changing from an asus p8h67-m pro to a gigabyte ga-z68xp-ud3r, using windows 7 home premium, would i have to reinstall OS?

Even though I'm changing chipsets it should still be possible to do so without having to reinstall, right?

any help would be appreciated.

You don't have to re-install Win7, but it will ask (Windows) to have it re-activated again. For some reason when you pull out the HDD, after a time the OS has a safety feature that asks to have it activated again. Never had to re-install the OS in my many mobo changes.

Re-activating is very straight forward as long as you're connected to the internet it should be a one click of a button type of operation. It should prompt you; just follow the on-screen instructions and you should be good.

If you're lucky you shouldn't even have to go through this it just depends on how long your HDD is unplugged (I think).

I have always done a fresh install when changing manufacturers...  If it was asus to asus, then maybe. Have had issues with driver conflict on a friends system that went from one to another...

If you do decide to keep it, I suggest running driver sweeper in safemode and remove all drivers(checkbox in everything), then reboot and install new ones...
