OC phenom II x6 1045t

Thread Starter
Every guide ive read so far seems out of date (like 5+ years) so i was wondering if im on the right track. my cpu isnt unlocked so ive been having to bump up the fsb to oc it. what ive been doing is running my ram at a slower speed and letting the fsb oc it back up to what its rated to run and then changing the HTL multiplier so that its just a little over 2000MHZ. so far ive oc to a fsb of 255 which brought my cpu from 2.7 to 3.44 and i changed the multiplier of my HTL to 8 so it runs at 2040MHZ and dropped my ram down to 1066 speed so that i dont overheat my 1333. i had to pump 1.25v into my cpu so that it wouldnt blue screen on me logging in to windows, but ive read i can take this cpu close to 1.5v. am i oc'ing correctly so i can keep pushing this or should i leave the HTL and RAM alone?

Edit: Forgot to say my cpu is running at 17c idle and 31c after 8 hours of prime95

Your doing good so far remember to test stability using prime95, are you using the stock Hsf
Edit just noticed you have a antec 620, keep temps under 55c and also keep NB close to stock

Try these settings - Manually lower the RAM frequency to 667 Mhz and increase DRAM voltage to 1.65v. Increase FSB to 260. Manually set the vcore to 1.48-1.52, increase CPU/NB frequency to about 2500-2800Mhz and increase voltage for the same to 1.3v-1.35v. Make sure that the HT link is as close to stock as possible. If stable, start increasing the FSB in 5 Mhz increments till you hit a wall. After that, slowly start increasing the memory until you fine the sweet spot. Phenoms' usually prefer lower clocks and tighter timings.

Keep an eye on the temps.

Generic memory? (i.e. 1333 CL9)
The low binning of such memory is not good for high overclocks.  You'll be held back at about 3.375Ghz and might just never reach 4Ghz, let alone anything beyond that.  It doesn't help, and should be replaced if it can't overclock to 1500-1600Mhz (chances are due to low binning it won't).

Don't worry about overheating DDR3 RAM by the way, DDR3 RAM doesn't overheat easily (even without heatspreaders) until you're pushing volts into the 1.9s.

alright after MANY MANY resets ive come up with the max my cpu can handle. not sure which one to go with im about to start running some benchmarks. i can either run it with all 6 cores at 3.8Ghz or if i disable 2 and run it as a quad i can get it up to 4.18Ghz. the quad runs about 8c cooler also

So I think I'm lowering my oc a bit cuz I don't like having my voltage so high. What do you think would be better for gaming a quad at 4ghz or a hex at 3.7

Quad, since games today barely make use of 4 threads, let alone 6.
