[PS]Stop me if you've heard this before, mainstream media says Vita is in trouble. - Page 3

As a Japanese, I do want the Vita (and plan to get it), but not right now. Most of those games arent ones I see my friends play in Japan, so im betting that Vita will sell very nicely once the games are released. I dont want to spend money for a expensive paper weight until games that I like come out. I dont often even see western games (like uncharted) in weekly ranking of the top games sold in Japan.

Nintendo's marketing practises are really good. And they are also ethically, as opposed to some companies we know.

Vita looks like a good console...but there isn't a big and very successful market for it for the price. They should have kept with the phone design. That was good...just needed better marketing.

Until the 360, we had to replace every sony console nearly 4 times as they broke a week after the 1-year warranty ran out. I hope the ps4 doesn't suffer the same fate. So far, only being played a few times this year, it still runs. biggrin.gif

360 at least got its play time out of it whenever it got the 3 rrod. Same with the old PS2s we had.

And the DS? Just shy of 150 million.

And if you want to remove the claim of "Well the DS has had a ton of revisions"?

Top selling games:
DS: New Super Mario Bros 26.21 million
PSP: Monster Hunter Freedom 3 4.6 million

Face it, the PSP and the PS Vita as well, cannot even touch the DS and 3DS. It is inexcusable in my eyes for a console to basically have half of another, and yet fall flat on its face when it comes to the best selling game, there is no reason why the best selling game on the PSP shouldn't be roughly 13 million, other than the fact that there is a low attachment rate to it, compared to the DS.

I also really don't understand your argument that the Mario/Zelda/Pokemon games are the same, I'll give you the fact that every now and then Nintendo does release a complete refresh of a game (OOT 3D) but each successor is something new, the only real exception to this has been Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 which clearly were set in the same area. I've been playing Mario games since I was a kid on my N64, I have still to get bored of them, and I am clearly older than what Nintendo is marketing to. If anything is clear, its the fact that the opposite is true for the majority of people New Super Mario Bros sold 26.21 million copies.

Nintendo is the Disney of video games, you're never really too old to get out of them, and they will still bring a smile to your face.

It's not really intended to touch the DS or 3DS market, those are for generally the younger generation. 70 Million PSP's sold is a pretty big number, regardless if a system thats a lot different did more. Not only that but if you watch hardware sales in Japan Sony has been dominating Nintendo pretty steadily over the last year. If you guys read the article he mentions a theory why PS Vita hasn't sold that well yet, its missing its major japanese geared titles.

And sales do not = good.

Alienman, this thread is referring to sales

and I'm appointing that the PSP started bad and now its one of the best selling handheld consoles, the same with the PS3 in the home console market

so its easy to assume the same thing will happen to Vita

Im not comparing it to the DS, that for me is a toy, simple as that

I play games not sales, and the games I like are not the in DS-3DS

and sorry if you like to play the same games over and over again, I love uncharted for example, but I will not play the damn game if they keep exploding the series in 20 years

Ontopic: I do not know what the hell happen in Japan, same thing with Gran Turismo 5....horrible sales compared to last GT games....Its like they are loosing the good taste

5+ years ago I would have been ALL OVER a dedicated gaming device. And I was, that's why I bought the DS, DS Lite, and PSP 2000. Now, however, I require more functionality out of my mobile devices and do not wish to carry an extra one whose sole purpose is gaming. I'll be happy enough gaming on the go with my Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch (And occasionally my DS Lite when a new Layton game is released) I'm more interested in developments in the Android space than Ninty or Sony's mobile platforms now smile.gif The PS Vita has some expanded functionality, but not enough to entice me. The 3DS even less so.

I have a feeling though that the Vita should do pretty well if the battery can hold a decent charge, and I'm excited to see what it can do, but it's not a platform I'm interested in personally.

It's not that SONY doesn't have games; the problem is that a lot of there games are regular full size games that they just dumb down to fit on portable systems. Patapon and Locoroco are the only two PSP games I own that don't have a larger PS2/PS3 counter part. There are very few PSP games that I would ever consider playing when I have a full size system available. This makes SONY's portable machine into something on only use on the go and you are usually too busy to care much about handheld games when you are out and about / traveling.

Don't get me wrong I did enjoy several PSP games that seemed to offer new things and went beyond their console counterparts, but there are only a few including Peace Walker, Monster Hunter, and Valkyria Chronicles. I think a lot of PSP games are made with much smaller budgets and alternate dev teams that feel more comfortable just mimicking their PS3 leaders and using weaker hardware as a crutch rather than trying to innovate or evolve.

I don't agree 100% with the dumbed down comment. For example, I just beat God of War Chains of Olympus and I felt it was equal to God of War 1 and 2 easily. Crisis Core I put more hours into than I put on almost any game on my PS3. There are also unique games like Killzone liberation that are perfect for a handheld, yet differ from the PS3's style of that game. I'm not saying this is ALWAYS the case, but I think that with Vita even more so you will see games be much closer to PS3 in size due to almost no size limitations, or hardware.

Metal Gears are another great example.... their is more long playablity to the portable MGS's than the real console ones, due to wifi stuff.
