Regardless of what software you use, if you record huge amounts of data, you need quick hard drives to respond immediately. An SSD isn't just enough, your best bet would be to have an SSD with 500 mb/s write speed and to maximize the whole experience, run 2 SSD's in Raid. So you can see it's not very cheap to record high fps games at high quality

I record in the Dxtory video codec, and at 30 fps at 1280x720 to a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda, which is basically SATA 3.

It works fine for me, even when my OS and game are on the drive as well, and it doesn't look laggy at all.

You could try recording to an external drive or thumb drive for a few minutes though and see if that makes a difference.

The DXTory codec is not the best, this one is: http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
You can follow jackfrags' tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw6YAoai8fQ&list=UUw7FkXsC00lH2v2yB5LQoYA&index=2
He is very good at this kind off stuff, and if he says this is the best, it is.

I tried Lagarith Lossless Video Codec and it eats more performance and disk space than mjpeg in free available MSI afterburner... yes, mjpeg is not lossless but less hungry

And I have to say that mjpeg by picvideo is even faster... and for me most smooth in Battlefield 3 with very nice and acceptable disk usage

18s with Lagarith Lossless Video Codec got 660MB
22s with afterburner mjpeg got 133MB
1m24s with picvideo mjpeg got 344MB

if performance (even disk usage) is top priority there is nothing better than mjpeg, especially picvideo with detailed setup

tested on 2500k@4,5Ghz, GTX580, 1600x900@144Hz (everything low ingame), Samsung 830 SSD

if anybody is interested I can upload to youtube
