HTPC Vs "Smart TV'

Thread Starter
As of the subject, I would like to gather some information and opinions with regards to these two.I have been building computers and have the know-how to assemble a htpc(been using xbmc on my main rig)

So heres the situation, my parents television is down and my dad is about to purchase a Smart TV( http://www.samsung.com/sg/consumer/tv-audio-video/television/index.idx?pagetype=type_p2&)

I am aware of how the people here love their htpc's so do I:D but my folks obviously not tech-savvy will not know. As advertised, these 'Smart' televisions can stream media from my current server in the basement as well as surf web. But aren't it what htpc's do?Seems to me like they are overlapping roles. I figured the extra money spent on a smart tv and later on a htpc is kind of wasting money or am I wrong?

So my question is would you guys get a 'smart tv' or just a normal LED one+htpc?

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.thumb.gif

In my opinion, Smart TV's are just a ploy to include some basic media overlays and functions in ordinary LCD televisions in order to market them as much more functional then regular Televisions.

It really does not have nearly quite the same capabilities of a HTPC.

You're lacking a proper media playback system, as well as the ability to store media on the Local System.

Not to mention all the other capabilities of a regular computer: Web browsing, gaming, etc.

I am aware that the Smart TV attempts to address some of these capabilities, but having experience with these smart TV's in the past, they do not quite compare to a HTPC, let alone replace it.

I don't own a smart TV but do own a Logitech Revue or Google TV, Roku, PS3, X Box, and have built at least a couple of HTPC's recently!

IMO it would depend on the user ultimately! You might be comfortable using and HTPC, but your parents might love the menu layout and ease of use of the apps on a smart TV!

I know my wife does love our ROKU better than the HTPC, her brother recently bought a Smart TV and she thinks that is easy to use. I on the other hand love the HTPC and would not buy into the Smart TV propaganda (as I see it), but I definitely understand her point of view, there is a reason why every TV manufacturer is making Smart TV's and they are selling like hot cakes all across the country!

If your parents are buying a smart TV to watch regular cable or OTA TV then its most definitely a waste of money, but if they are looking at streaming content from the internet (say Netflix, Amazon VoD, Hulu etc) then maybe a cheaper alternative would be to get a box like a Roku or Revue and a normal LCD/LED TV, would work out cheaper than a Smart TV or an HTPC! Those streaming devices cost less than $100, I would assume the price diff between a normal TV and a Smart one would be greater than that & we know that you cannot build an HTPC from scratch for that cost!

Now if they do want to store the content somewhere on a drive (local or NAS) and access it from there then a computer (HTPC) would defenitely be the best alternative!

Ahhh that makes some sense david. I was contemplating between the two again last night. Was considering using xbmc as the front end. I went ahead and youtube couple of reviews of the samsung smart tv and it has this remote and GUI that seems pretty easy to use and a keyboard behind for web browsing. If I were to use a htpc, I probably have to configure my wmc remote for that. So on that perspective, a smart tv would seem easy to use. Until..... I scrolled down and saw couple of comments about youtube streaming slow on that television, web browsing slow and all.Lol. I am not too sure if its the hardware in there thats causing that or those people were running off wireless(I only stream wired) If thats the case I'll forgo the smart tv for a htpc because I had an xtreamer for my dad previously and he complained that the menu is uber low and unresponsive. That is the reason for the upgrade so if its slow again its gonna defeat the purpose(dads an impatient man biggrin.gif)

Perhaps someone with experience with smart tv's can comment.

Thanks for the input so far smile.gif
