New Build with a 960T - First OC

Thread Starter
Hey all,

Yesterday I bought new primary computing components for my gaming computer less storage and optical (terrible time to buy a HDD no matter how badly I want to lose my old 120GB 5400rpm Seagate). This is not my first build (probably... 7th or 8th?) but my first time looking into Overclocking and definitely my first time hoping for unlocking cores. I've read a lot of great stuff about the 960T and I can't wait to get it all installed.

Couple questions:

First off, is anyone else running a Phenom II x4 960T with a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 or similar board? I ask this specifically because the CPU compatibility list on the Gigabyte website suggests that the default BIOS version F1 won't work with this CPU and I'll need to upgrade to version F4. I think I'm going to try plugging in the new 960T anyway and try to update the BIOS after, but if I don't get a POST or get to the BIOS I'll just stick my old Phenom 9450BE in there to update the BIOS first. I'd be interested in any thoughts on that topic.

Secondly I guess some noob questions. My intent is to first get my whole system up and running with everything stock, then try to unlock to hex and then depending on the outcome look into some moderate OCing of either the 4 or 6 cores. Mostly I'm just curious to see how I can get it to perform; I likely will not regularly take advantage of all 6 (though the prospect of running a decent VM while playing SWTOR sounds fun).

So... I'm looking for any tips or points in the direction of some quick education about OCing this mobo/CPU. I'll be running stock air for now, at least, and I'm looking for stable dependability, so I'll probably shoot for around the 3.4-3.6Ghz range. I may be interested in pushing my new memory a bit as well.

Last thing: I've done very little stress testing or benchmarking so far and am interested in some input regarding good tools to use. I've been browsing around this morning picking up ideas from other OCers, but any directed recommendations would be appreciated.

Sorry for the TLDR style of this post. Hah.

I'll keep the thread updated as I put together and start playing with my new rig.

Thanks!

I wouldn't even bother booting that 960T without updating your bios first.Even though you have a new board and it should support Thuban based chip.

i bought the chip after reading this thread. and i agree with red, update is simple on a gigabyte - do that first.

even if you're unable to unlock the extra cores the 960T will not disappoint.

what kind of cooling are you using?

wish you the best!

sorry, here it is . . .

Thanks Red, I think I'll do that. Probably safer to handle the new CPU as little as possible anyway.

So I've been reading! Excited about the 960T and the good deals from Newegg this weekend. My plan right now is just to use the fan that comes with the CPU. Hence my modest aspirations. Once I can convince my wife that it's a good idea to spend a few more bucks on the computer I'll upgrade my case (dear God my case is almost 9-years old...) CPU cooling, and storage.

I've been playing SWTOR at 10-30FPS on my 9450BE/9600GT/Asus 790... I may not know what to do with myself at 80 fps.

get a decent air cooler and you can get some real good speed out of these chips.

Stock volts should be fine up to 3.5-3.7. Just change the multi and up the NB to 2400-2800 if you're feeling spunky.

Sweet. Thanks. I may try to break into the UPS facility where my hardware is going to be sitting for the next 3 days and try to bust it out...

You can go higher on the NB if you want. Some people top out around 2500 while some are stable past 3000. I top out somewhere in the 2900-3000 area on reasonable CPU NB voltage.

You also get better performance by upping the FSB instead of just changing the multi. But that can lead to motherboard instability, and in my opinion, pushing extra voltage through a motherboard isn't worth it for the extra bit of performance. I push my FSB (BLCK, rather ... I'm still getting used to terminology coming from Intel biggrin.gif) as far as I can go without increasing any voltages to the MB. Then I up my CPU multi.

As for CPU, if you plan on going further than what stock volts will get you: don't exceed 1.5-1.55v for 24/7 usage and keep temps under 62C load. I use Prime95 to stress test and use Everest to monitor my temps.

So after talking to you guys and messing around with my current build after reading more about all of this stuff I jumped back on Newegg and bought a HYPER 212 Plus cooler. Reading here and in the feedback on Newegg I think that should be perfect for my intended use of this chip.

Tomorrow when I install my new hardware I'm going to have a time cleaning out my case. I went home Saturday and installed CPU-Z, Core Temp, and wPrime on my current computer PH I x4 9850 BE (I was working from memory and got it wrong before...) on an Asus M3N78PRO. With my current setup and hopelessly dirty case I was over 80C running Prime. YOWZA!! I did look at and play with the OCing features a little bit in the BIOS hoping to familiarize myself with the process a bit, but if anything I wanted to underclock it at those temps, not overclock.

Why doesn't UPS ship on holidays? Cmon! I read a Newegg review showing someone running their 960T unlocked to 6 cores at 3.7 at stock volts (iirc) with VERY low temps with their Hybrid 212+... I want a turn.
