evga gtx 580 3gb x1 or Radeon 6950 Iceq turbo x2 ?

First question towards my new build, I'm considering both platforms, amd and intel, I do have AMD currently, my main interest is gaming for this rig, it's going to be a dedicated gaming machine, with some overclocking, and little else, daily we browsing, youtube, music playback, etc.
first system is amd, it would consist of the 1100t, the 990fx sabertooth, both systems will run 8 gigs of 1600 ram power supply will be in the 850w range
Second system would consist of the maximus extreme iv z68 board, and an i5 2500k, the rest of the consistants would be a coolermaster haf series case (haven't decided the exact model yet) corsair 850w psu, and 8g of 1600 corsair vengeance ram, cpu cooler is still up in the air, haven't made my mind up yet
The question is given these two basic setups, wich gpu configuration is going to deliver the best shear gaming performance, 1 of the gtx 580 3gb cards, or two HIS Radeon 6950 iceq turbo oc'd cards in crossfire?

You should go intel all the way. I have a 1100 and love it, but I will be going intel ivy on my next cpu when it launches 2012. There are just advantages than can not be denied. Depending on what the microsoft patch does for bulldozer will determine if I stay amd another year. If i didnt have the motherboard I have I wouldnt even feel tied to stay at all but I love the ROG asus line. The maximum gene z68 you chose has great reviews and probably what I would get if I cant afford the full atx version, $300+ on a mobo is hard to swollow for me.

On the gpu side of things, if you go AMD for cpu stick with a single high end gpu like the 580gtx, amd seems to handle a single gpu fine, but when there are 2 high end gpu's thats when the fps cant keep up with intel. The gams you play make a difference too, if you overclock to 4ghz on amd and play games that use at least 4 cores, you wont really feel the less fps. If your an amd fan and want to stick with it you will still have a great time with amd, if you want to run crazy resolutions and $1000 in video cards or just be a benchmark queen, intel is a must.

As for gpu, january the 7970 will launch and thats what you should really get, it will be priced less than a 3gb 580gtx and perform better than it in every way, just look up 7970 benchmark. Otherwise if you want to stay nvidia get the 580gtx so you can sli later

edit:

I would also like to add that if you can afford 1866mhz memory to go for it, more overclock headroom without having to overclock the memory.

thanks for some excellent info, the target build date is going to be mid february, that should be plenty of time to see how the 7970 performs in real world scenario's.

yeah perfect build time, by then the 7950 might be out too, although headlines say it might get delayed. Im wondering how that will do though, Im day dreaming of it performing like a gtx580 in the $400 range. I havent even seen a bench on that but the 7970 is amazing!

If your planning on gaming a 1080p 60hz the gtx580 would be more than enough, the gtx570 i have plays bf3 on 1080 ultra msaa off in 64player matches, min 50fps, average 70-80fps depending on map, max 95fps, the 120fps is usually when I die and enter the spawn menu lol. You might find a used gtx580 cheap when the 7970 lands. I like new parts though personally.

2 6950s will destroy a gtx 580, but I would also wait for the AMD 7 series.
