Fan blow out or in?

Debated if this should be a air or water cooling question however since my system is water cooled putting it here.

On my Cosmos S case I have a big arse fan. By default it blows air in the case. My system if water cooled with six fans doing a push pull thru the rad on the top lowing air in. Have a fan in the front blowing air in over the hard drives mounted in the bottom of the case. Have a fan on the back blowing air out. MB and 980x CPU are water cooled.

Graphic card is low end fanless as I do not use this with a monitor. Just need it to pass the HDCP test. Then a Ceton cable card.

Any thoughts on having the big front fan blowing air over the components or pushing air out?

I can definitely provide pics just on my iPad right now so can't attach a picture. Appreciate any guidance.

If the fans are on top push air out, you're going against how heat works. Keep the front fan blowing in and change your rad fans on top to exhaust. Heat rises, don't work against it.

i would put rad fans blowing in and the others blowing out. i want the most fresh air blowing through my radiator.

if its on the front genrally i would have it as an intake fan, and exhaust at the rear IMO smile.gif oh and yes i forgot about your rad, yes have them blowing out as others have said. heat rises thumb.gif

Hmmm, so you're saying you are going to have 3 slots at the top blowing air in, which makes some sense because you want so fresh cool air into your top mounted radiator and the front fan makes sense. But the problem is, you're going to need a powerful exhaust fan at the back as it needs to expel the air from the massive radiator at the top AND the front.
I'm pretty sure the Cosmos S has a side-panel mounted fan (230mm I recall?) and use THAT to chuck air out of the case through the sidepanel. With that it should be all good.
If it's just your back panel I reckon there would be a overload of warm air accumulating in the case.

Air goes where you make it go.

You can be running a positive or negative air pressure setup and have almost no difference in temperatures. What matters is that the essential parts are getting air flow and the heat is being dissipated.

In any case (no pun intended): You don't want the hot air from your radiator going back into your case unless it's being immediately sent out. Otherwise, the air is going to recirculate within your case and just increase the temperature within.

I know air goes where you push it whether it wants to or not. But what I'm saying is why work against something that tries to naturally occur? (and in your favor in this instance)

If you can help it, yes, you want as little resistance as possible.

However, the point I'm trying to get across is that you can, for the most part, ignore which way heat goes and instead focus on making sure heat is getting out of your case and in the right places. You don't want hot air running over your CPU block and you don't want fresh intake air being immediately exhausted.

Once you get everything figured out and working optimally, the natural direction of heat is an afterthought.

I'm still new at this, so I'm still learning. I'm still trying to grasp why it matters why warm airflow matters over a CPU water block. Doesn't cooling come from the block itself? That's the logic I was thinking when I did intakes on my rads. I thought that it would be better to pull cooler outside ambient temps through the rad fins then pushing warmer air within a case through the rad fins. My temps isn't that warm in the case playing games all day, and I did intakes on all my rads. I only have the one exhaust fan in the back, and I have side panel intake/exhaust for the bottom rad. My CPU idles at mid-high 20's to low 30's, and in the mid-high 50's under load (Prime 95). Both GPU's are at mid-high 20's to low 30's at idle, and I haven't seen temps go over 50 under load yet. My case seems to be fine with all intakes on my rads, so I probably won't change it, but I still want to learn and understand why it's better to exhaust internal case air through the rads.

If you have that many fans blowing air into the case, even from the top, use your side fan as an exhaust. You want to have air flowing through your case. If everything is an intake, it will not cool as well.

Also, the whole 'hot air rises' does not work with a forced air flow. The fans, any fans, will greatly exceed the force necessary to change the air flow direction.
