[MSNBC] Japan shaken by 7.0 offshore quake - Page 6

One of the great things about living in the UK is natural disasters pretty much never happen. It makes the national news if a twisters is large enough to rip a few tiles off a roof - let alone do any real damage.

However I do just want to echo what someone else pointed out in regards to this 'quake only making the news due to the Japan crisis of last year.

Slow news day? I don't actually know. Japan, New Zealand, the west coast of the US and South America is on 'The Pacific Ring of Fire' you should google it if you want to find out what it is if you don't already know. It's famous for volcanos and quakes.

EDIT: Ring of Fire

Looks like the new year is off to a shaky start for Japan.

Yet again, Columbus is like half-way across the state from where the quake was. I'm near Kent State and I didn't even feel it!

And yet again, I didn't feel this one either, nor did it seem like anyone else here did. Like I said, I think the ground in Northeast Ohio may be much more absorbent than a good majority of the eastern/midwest US. I know back in Geology class in High School there was one place we went slightly northeast of us to show that the dirt was really soft and almost squishy. Not only that, but if you go even more north, you actually start hitting sand from the remnants of a larger Lake Erie from the end of last Ice Age.

Also, around 5-ish years ago there were a good amount of small to mid-sized quakes around Northeast Ohio. And even then we were only able to feel one that practically went straight through our city. This too supports my "absorbent soil" theory.

But Izanagi and Izanami created the islands of Japan for them, they wont leave. It's like asking the United States to give itself over to the U.K. after winning its independence.

Glad though there's no signs of another tsunami afoot.

Well that's amazing. 7.0 is something that can flatten cities and kill thousands, I guess it's really all about the epicenter tongue.gif

And also what type of quake. A 9.0 of some type of quakes even in the perfect position couldn't trigger a Tsunami. thumb.gif
