All intake and no "dedicated" exhaust?!

Just wondering what you guys think. Im making a small custom case that has or will have 5 120mm fans.

Would having all 5 run as intake fans be less effective than having a few run as exhaust fans?

The case itself has the psu mounted sideways and venting out the side but everything else is pretty well sealed aside from the three front fans and two top fans.

depending on where the fans are placed you will see a lot of turbulence. I would definetly make a dedicated exaust.

it really depends on the orientation of the components and where the case is going to be located. if the case is going to be located in a semi enclosed area(under a desk) then 2x top intake is a poor idea since you'll be sucking hot air trapped by the table top right back into your case and creating a thermal short circuit situation. recirculation of hot air is the primary concern you want to avoid in this case. IF the layout of the case is good,(like a FT02) then there is no particular reason to have any exhaust fans since the GPU, powersupply, and cpu heatsink are already pushing hot air out of the case anyway. most people neglect to consider just how much hot air is pushed out by the GPU fans. if you turn your GPU fan on full blast and put your hand at the back of the gpu exhaust, you'll know what i mean.

Only testing will tell as each case is unique but in 99% of cases you want dedicated exhaust because just blowing air in to a box doesn't mean effective removal of hot air. You can effectively justs keep recirculating hot air unless you have dedicated exhaust fans.

That would be some extremely poor fan placement or some terrible fans, or both.

I've read about people doing this but I've never had anything close to success with it. I say the classic that has always worked for me. Front/Side=Intake Top/Back=Exhaust

Thats most likely what il do. I have 2 fans up top that could be used as exhaust fans the three (or 6 if push pull) on the front would be intake fans.

I have heard that having more intake than exhaust will keep allot of dust out. This would be nice for me especially since all my fan holes are filtered.

I was going to start a thread about this earlier. Last night I opened my case to see how many spare fan headers I had left. On doing so I realised my rear exhaust fan was on the wrong way! It was acting as an intake!!! I have never changed the config although I did buy it 2nd hand but the guy I bought it off had it only a few days. I doubt it would have shipped like that but I guess its possible. Either way I corrected it and added a pull fan to my venomous x, I am now seeing 6C lower temps across the board!

You have to have somewhere for the air to exhaust whether it a fan, or just a grill.

The case still vents one way or another it's not a balloon. Exhaust fans just pull hot air out of the case so it's good you found the issue.
