A good replacment for Audio Technica ATH-A700 - Page 2

I usually try to avoid threads like these where everyone is all over the spectrum and clearly lacking in experience, but I'm going to set a few things straight.

The M50s are better than the A700s in terms of bass. That's it.

The A700s have a larger sound stage than every headphones mentioned in this thread.

The HD595s don't compare to any other headphone here except the A700s and the A700s imo are better in every way.

The D1100s are a good headphone that often get overshadowed by others as it is not a master of one area and people typically tend to be polar in their needs. They either want strong bass in which Ultrasone 580s take it's place or want an enormous sound stage where AD/A700s take it's place.

The D1100 is a middle ground of sorts..

What the OP chooses to buy is up to his needs and wants though.

Since you don't want "3D Wing crap" the A900s are out of the question.

The Ultrasone Pro 550s do seem like a good buy for you though. Good sound stage (inferior to the A700s), but much better bass. Less than 150.

And if you don't have a sound card, you can toss the extra towards a DX or something.

Thanks guys!

Also, how much of a difference does a soundcard really make? I'm using onboard sound(my motherboard is Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z). How much better will my headphones sound if I get a decent soundcard? Is it worth it? Thanks again.

There's going to be a difference if you use any of the DSP features like surround sound processing or Dolby Headphone that maybe a sound card offers. If you hear annoying clicks or buzzing or noise sounds in your onboard audio, that can easily be improved.

Otherwise, it's hard to say as the onboard audio implementation on pretty much every motherboard is different. Generally you won't get the specs on the spec sheet in the real world, what with how electrically busy motherboards are with digital signals and large amounts of current flowing nearby to CPUs and GPUs. So even motherboards using the same chip may have significantly different audio quality. How do you do a comparison to baseline without knowing what the baseline is?

In general, for many headphones that are not particularly picky, don't expect very significant differences, but this is just a blanket generalization of course.

I recommended the Ultrasone 680's because they have a tad less bass than the 550's or 580's and have cleaner highs and mid's. They are a great all around headphone and preform well for just about any kind of music. They also do well for games due to the Slogic that ultrasone has in all their headphones.
