narrowing down my choices based on what I'm seeing on newegg, requirements being: AM3 phenom II, ddr3 ram 1600, 2 sli slots, good customer rating.

It's more expensive than those others (at $154), but...

I don't want to spend more than $154 on a motherboard, but having spend $90 on the msi board and having that die in 6 months, I am wary of "deals."

Bad choices. Most of those motherboards dual PCI-E lanes run at 16x and 4x. Bad. You need 16x and 8x at least.

This is a great board at a great price for you. Right PCI-E lanes, DDR3 1600 supportive. Good rating too.

That last gigabyte board would be good too though.

Thanks. I did not know to look for that. I only have one graphics card now, but I was thinking of getting another 570 some time down the road.

with this new criteria I also found this:

but I suppose with the price of the asrock one you posted, I'd get 16x for both instead of 16 and 8. I may well go with that one;
but then there are 99 5-egg review for the one and 20 for the other...

Thanks for the help, Phaedrus2129 and White Fire!

Installed new Gigabyte board : 990XA-UD3
Plugged everything in... cpu fan and case fans start up. Keyboard and Mouse do not light up. Graphics card fan does not start.
Unplugged all case fans, left cpu fan in... same result. mobo sounds like it's working, but can't get bios without "delete" key!
Tried using only 1 stick of ram; no difference. yes it's in the proper place as specified in mobo manual.
Now unplugging everything to try with cpu and ram and peripherals.
