i7 3930k New Rig Component Selection Advice Please

Thread Starter
Hi all

I'm building a new rig for FSX and would appreciate some advice on component selection.

Im comfortable building rigs but never ventured into the overclocking scene which reading some of the posts i think I've found another obsession.

I haven't built rigs for a while so please be patient with some of my queries.

Here is my list so far....

InWin Dragon Rider Full ATX case
i7 3930k
Corsair H100
Corsair Force 3 120Gb SSD (OS)
Corsair Force 3 240Gb SSD (FSX)
WD Velociraptor 10000rpm 600Gb (Data)
Corsair 850W Pro Gold PSU
Power color HD 6970 ATI Eyeinfinty 4

I'm struggling to decide on which motherboard and memory to use.

In choosing a mobo I am considering adding another Power color HD 6970 ATI Eyeinfinty 4 in a cross fire arrangement.

The Asus range of mobos look favorable but which would you suggest based on your initial testing and experimentation?

The Corsair Dominator or G Skill Ripjaws Z look good also but....

Does the chosen memory have to be on the manufacturers tested list with that particular mobo especially as I intend to overclock?

How do I decide which CL, Volt and MHz would be te best for this overclock and which of these is the most important?

Any suggestions with the best appropriate memory?

Will my PSU be powerful and stable enough with te addition of this other graphics card?

Is there a step by step guide for te overclocking process based on te i7 3930k or can I use the i7 2600k guide for the principles of overclocking?

Is there a table available for suitable mobo bios settings for the i7 3930k at different frequencies?

Apologies in advance if these questions are a bit basic or repetitious, I would really appreciate your valued input into my rig smile.gif

Looks alright. I think it might be worth getting a 7xxx series AMD card though.

Been out of the game for a while.

In reading posts and other sites the general opinion I have formed rightly or wrongly is the Intel Platform wins over AMD hence my choice.

As I will be using this for FSX the processor speed and number of cores is key.

I assume your suggest for using AMD was due to the graphics cards I'm using?

Do the AMDs measure up to the i7 3930k?

Apologies for the repeated spelling errors, dam iPad!

He probably meant to wait to get an AMD graphics card. I'd agree with you that intel is leaps ahead of AMD in terms of multicore processing though... well, in terms of everything actually.

I use an Asus Sabertooth x79 mobo and I'm pretty happy with it. It comes with less preset overclock settings than say the more expensive rampage series, but a reasonable overclock is not too tough on the SBe chips to begin with. Overclock on the sabertooth is pretty comparable to the more expensive ones, on the other hand the price point is pretty reasonable given the features.

I've heard good things about the gigabyte boards, but stay away from eVGA mobos for now.

Budget? Rampage iv extreme is the only x79 mobo to get. Everything else fails in comparison. Just an epic board.

Cheers all.

Budget wise probably about £2500.

Already have one of the PowerColour Graphics Cards.

Rampage iv Extreme is that the best out of the Asus mobo range?

What memory should I use, I thinking of 4 x 8Gb sticks.

Corsair Dominator or G skill Ripjaws Z?

Will using the higher MHz ranges assist with better overclocking?

Fat_italian_stallion what MHz is your memory in your rig?

What's your rig running at currently stable?
1866mhz. I had ripjaws and replaced with dominators. Seem to be more stable so far, but haven't installed the waterblocks on them yet to really push them. should easily be able to do 2133. 24 hour prime stable at 5.4, but I prefer not to push such high voltage for such little gains for everyday use. The 8gb sticks will give u a more stable OC at less voltage bc less dimms compared to 8x 4gb. IMO dominators are the only way to go unless ur getting 2400mhz ripjaws

You have been very helpful.

Do I need to use the Gold series PSU or will the Bronze do.

Im assuming the volts will be more stable on the top of the range PSU especially for oc rigs.

Do you think I would be better with a larger PSU.

I'm thinking 850watt but with the following devices I'm concerned it may struggle what's your thoughts?

2 x 2Gb 6970 Graphics cards
2 x SSD drives
1 x WD 10000rpm 600Gb Velociraptor
Corsair H100
Probably Pioneer BD Rewriter
Creative 7.1 SoundCard
Will probably use all USB ports as its for an FSX rig

What would be the typical Ghz that would be expected with thie following

Asus Rampage Iv Extreme
i7 3930k
Corsair Dominator 4 x 8Gb 1866Mhz

Would there be any benefit from say the 2133Mhz or 2400Mhz instead?

850w is fine.here are some suggestions
480

The ASRock mobo comes with a Creative 8 channel sound card. They are making great quality boards right now.
That particular 6970 from HIS has the best air cooling out right now.
The new Corsair Performance Pro SSD's are their answer to Crucial's M4 and does not use the Sandforce controller which has had some reliability problems.
If you really don't need the 240GB SSD for FSX you could use 2 1TB HDD's in R.A.I.D. and skip the Velociraptor

NOTE : The 3930K was out of stock so the 970 was added for budget purposes
