Keep I5 2500K and start a new build or wait Ivy Bridge?

Thread Starter
Hello Everyone,

A friend got two I5 2500K when he bought one from an internet reseller, so i got one 2500K for 150 euros ( against 200 /210 euros).

Shall I wait for Ivy bridge, or shall I build a new rig around the 2500K ? The current build is only 1year old, and would go for my brother next time I build a computer (with Sandy B, or Ivy B.)

As the prices seems to be quite same, I would try to resell the 2500K before Ivy if possible. I mostly play, and run some VMWare. The I5 2500K would be still good in 1-2 years, will we still find some MB for it ?
Shall we expect Ivy Bridge to be a big step from 2500Ks?

Thanks for the help and advices.

I say get a board that will work with the sandy and ivy bridge, and keep the 2500k for now. Overclock it to 4.5 and your set

^^^^^ what astonished said.
Ivy bridge will work in current 1155 sockets but may need a bios update.
I would personally go for a board which has PCI-E Gen3 support, as the Gen 3 will only work with an Ivy bridge CPU, and therefor they will definately update for Ivy bridge.

Might as well wait. You already have a more than capable system, and Ivy Bridge is right around the corner (April 8), so when that hits, you should see most of the previous generation chips drop in price, plus, you are then able to upgrade to the next generation. smile.gif

Keep the current rig, sell the sandy bridge chip now, and upgrade later if you need to. Your current setup is fine for most purposes.

My friend opened the box, and the seal is broken :x

The cpu doesn't have it's own warranty as only one was bought (or i mistake). Do you think that may drop the price a lot if i try to sell it? (180 euros? maybe more?)

I'll look the current MB and see if there's one that support PCI 3.0. In that case maybe I'll make the step and start a new rig (what do you do with you old cpus? ^^).
Otherwise I'll sell it. Does Ebay is a nice place or choose a local media ?

Thanks for the help, +rep as it's easier to choose with other enthusiast's opinion smile.gif

Most of the current Z68 Gigabyte and ASRock boards are PCI 3, so i'd start looking there.
You could try to sell the CPU here on OCN or eBay, but to be honest im not exactly sure as i've never sold a CPU before, i've found it easier to sell a complete system locally.

i agree build a new rig with your 2500k with an Ivy Bridge capable motherboard, then just swap over the cpu,or......
build another rig with the 2500k, use it for a HTPC microatx or mini itx even build. no discrete GPU required small and some cheap mobos for this, just make sure it can use the onboard graphics h61 boards are good for this i picked one up for 75 AUD$ asus P8H61LE/USB3, its got plenty of expansion slots for tuner/capture cards, wifi cards or what ever. what im saying is think outside the box be creative smile.gif
