Hi all,

I read a lot about the performance of SSDs as well as SRT with certain SSDs (namely the Intel 311) but I still cannot seem to decide on which option I want to go with. Here is the rest of my build

  • 2500k
  • P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
  • Corsair AX750 PSU
  • Corsair 500R
  • Hyper 212 Evo
  • Asus 6950
  • ... some other stuff I don't remember

So I have basically narrowed it down to 3 options.

  1. 64Gb SSD + 1TB HDD (SRT)
  2. 64Gb SSD + 1TB HDD (SSD as boot)
  3. 128Gb SSD [adding storage when needed]

That is pretty much my budget.
The 128Gb seems attractive because write speeds increase with capacity.

If anyone has experience with SRT in the long term, can you give me your opinions on its effectiveness compared to SSD as boot. If you are running an SSD boot drive, is it worth the hassle of manually moving data and all that separate volumes stuff?

Also does anyone know how SRT will impact the longevity of the SSD that is not an Intel 311.

Thanks

EDIT: Yep had my eyes on the Crucial M4. biggrin.gif

I haven't used SRT yet, this is my first SSD I've had so I cant give you a comparision. But using a SSD as boot is awesome, very responsive, fast load and boot up. Everything is very quick and snappy. There isnt that much of a hassle when having a second hard drive for extra storage and other applications/programs. Check out some of the guides here that I followed about how to set up the directories and paths. Easy to do and once you take a bit of time to do that, it all comes together and easy to manage where you want your software and files.

Thanks for the quick reply smile.gif

Right I'm leaning towards dedicated boot ssd, but I still want a few opinions before making a conclusive decision.
Thanks

sorry for the bump, but does anyone else have recommendations for which option to go for?

I'd say 64Gb SSD + 1TB HDD (SSD as boot). As for the SSD to get either a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830.

That is the exact way I have my set up right now! lol

SRT is good for those who want to just have extra speed + storage space, but a SSD being independent is best for performance.

BTW. You may want to read my guides in my sig wink.gif

I agree with Sean - SSD for OS + HDD. A small Steam account might fill an SSD all by itself.

Ah OK thanks

Also, I see that the write speed for the vertex 3 60gb version is like 500MBps.
How is that possible considering that the m4's is only 90
post #9 of 14
I originally bought the Vertex 3... It died in 4 days. I sent it back and got the m4. It may be because the Vertex 3 was going bad from the start, or maybe not, but my Crucial is significantly more responsive. I don't know much about SSD tech other than it's hard to imagine how I ever did without. No more annoying friggin clicking every time I do something too. thumb.gif

I would personally take an M4 over anything with SandForce in it. SF drives cause alot of problems. Besides, an M4 + latest firmware = flawless victory!

Another thing you can do is partition the SSD with one part for OS and another part for SRT. That way you get SSD epic speed for your OS and get SRT speed for all your other programs running from your HDD. I think I remember someone saying that if you've got 8GB of RAM you can actually safely turn off Windows system pagefile so it won't take valuable space from your SSD. This is what I'll be doing once I get an 64GB M4. Something to think about. thumb.gif

Also remember, your BIOS has to be set to RAID mode in order to use SRT and had to be set that way BEFORE you installed your OS.
