Nice card, I gotta say though I never 'got' the Sapphire artwork on the video cards, always felts silly and cheap looking. XFX tend to look simple and clean and a little militeristic on some of the models so I tend to go with them. But It'll likely blow things away quite well for you.

Honestly i completely agree, the add didnt have a picture of the card, so i was assuming he would have the cheaper PowerColor version or something, but i looked in his car when i picked it up, all i see is the box for an i7 970 my graphics card, and a Maximus 4 Formula board 0.o

if the glue they used wasnt so hard, i would have peeled off the stickers... and i just noticed how hot this card runs in comparison to the overkill cooling sapphire did to my 5830 0.o im also sending AMD a driver mistake i see, it seems when i change the fan speeds to take control of the temperatures, the fan revs up to 100% and slows down to match my settings, but other than that its uber smexy =]

also... i cant help but wonder what would happen if i Tri-fired it with a 5830.... i know i shouldnt. but then again.... im so curious as to see what the numbers will be like

The glue is absurd your right, it's meant to take all the heat these cards can genereate, and not peel off inside the case. Likely could strip the card, remove the heatsink from the platic shell and soak it in a mild cleaner that will eat at the adhesive.
I'm thinking the 100% fan speed is a bug in the bios/drivers for dual gpu cards, when I was stipping my buddies build trying to find what was causing his crashes, I was fiddling with his 6990, and every time windows starts up it races to full speed, then once MSI afterburner loads up it slowely slides down to whatever the setting is.
The tri-fire will work, the only flaw with the 5830 is it likely doesn't have the core clock or memory bandwidth to keep up without crippling the system, theoretically if you can match what the 5970 is you might be okay, or neglegable. However if you already have a cpu bottleneck with the 5970 which came up as a possibility, all it would do is make it worse.

Oh yes, and it still likely would be considered as such in single and crossfire, but when you start putting 3 gpu's behind it, and it's running at only 4Ghz, it might cause some bottleneck. Though it's all dependant on the coding of the games as well.

so will i actually see a performance increase with a 5830 CFX? or is it better just to leave the 5970 in there

too much work not worth it. you could try to overclock the 5830 an insane amount but it probably would still bottleneck

You may on games that fully utilize the gpu power, like metro2033, but other games that don't you likely won't notice a difference at all, or will notice a lower frame rate as the 5830 will likely bottleneck the 5970. Don't get me wrong I would love to be proven wrong, and the first thing I'd do had I a 5970 is tri-fire it with my severely overclocked 5850, but I doubt It would be beneficial for a 24/7 rig, and your psu might not cut it with tri-fire.

wait whaaa? 5830 has an overclock lock that sticks it at 875 /1200, and what do you mean it would still bottleneck? isnt my CPU the bottleneck?

EDIT, just saw the post after, oh ok i get it now, probably better to leave it to 1 card, and yeh a 5970 on this unit is stretching the fine lines a bit =P
