no -5V rail on my power supply, how to do 17V fan mod?

Thread Starter
i'd like to control the positive line with speedfan, +0 to +12V. so i could use the -12V line but that's bad because the minimum speed would be too loud. is there any way of making a -5 or -7V line? or should i give up on this idea?

What? 12+5 = 17... You gotta over volt fans by connecting to the molex connectors. So to the red and to the yellow and ground that sucker. Shazam, you got a spinning hamster killer! thumb.gif

You can also use 9v batteries, or 24v on the molex. Either way it's gonna be loud and blow you off your chair.

DO NOT DO THIS. The 12V rail will try to source an infinite amount of current into the 5V rail and your PSU (should) shut down due to too much current draw.

For 17V, use an external PSU or a boost converter.

What? 2002 was ten years ago. I've been doing this for years. It's pretty hard to send a current into a current that's headed in the opposite direction. hence the whole ground thing...

Current travels from a higher potential to a lower potential.

Either learn to electronics before trying to teach, or quit trolling.

You mean, the ground? I just said, I've been doing this for years. So has the guy that's taught me everything I know about computers. It's safe to not have OCD and anxiety about your computer, it's very well OK to ghetto rig stuff and treat it like garbage. Computers aren't made out of ceramic. The only place the fan is sending a current to is the ground, other than that it's pulling a total of 17 volts from one connection, <---wordage, PULLING. It doesn't loop back out. It's pulling and disposing.

You clearly have little knowledge of electronics. I have no idea how you haven't fried anything. You can't add voltages together like that. That's not how electronics works.

Fairly quick yes lol.

But you can. I have been doing it for. Years. If what your saying is true, then adding a second PSU would have the same result. Or if you were to add a 9v battery, that would sizzle/explode. Get some hair on your chest and try it. If you choose to live your life by a book, you will never write your own book. Clockwork is pretty simple to understand. AKA computers.

Dude, no. You are paralleling the voltages, and parallel voltages don't add. Like arandomowl is saying, the 12V line will source a ton of current into the 5V line.
