someone try this with the 5000rpm ultra kazes.

Have you measured the voltage between your "17V rail" and ground? I think you will find it is not 17V.

Sure, you can add a 9V battery...in series.

Thanks for the backup thumb.gif

Send me one and I will test it with my real 17V benchtop PSU as opposed to the 17j volts that redsunx is getting from his PSU .

You can also use 9v batteries, or 24v on the molex. Either way it's gonna be loud and blow you off your chair.

Buy better fans.

Redsunx, you are not running 17v. Different voltage sources in parallel are going to be somewhere between the two voltages of the sources. Also don't do it.

Completely incorrect.

Voltage is nothing but a difference, that's it. If you have 12V and 5V and you do have 7V. Same if you had 12V and -5V, you'd have17V.

then please make a 17v rail run one of these off it and record the outcome!!! thumb.gif

8000rpm@ 12v = 11.360rpm @17v

ive been mixing up brands, i meant Delta Fans. thumb.gif

Listen to mootsfox. Don't connect your +12V and +5V rails in parallel. Anyone telling you otherwise is simply wrong. If you are desperate to achieve your +17V potential, then use a boost converter circuit (as mentioned earlier) or an external power supply (perhaps old laptop supply). best of luck.

Edit: Don't do this. Although it depends on the fan, lifespan will be significantly reduced to days or even seconds.

Well that's true, but you can't magically "have" 17V if you have also 12 and 5. If you connect a device across 12V and 5V, the device "sees" 7V. From my knowledge, the only way you can "get" 17V from 12V and 5V sources is by using a boost converter or similar circuit.

Ok, I don't have a degree yet, but I'm getting there wink.gif It's unbelievable the amount of people who argue against the basic principles of electronics.

If you have a +12v and +5v, the potential difference is 7v.... not 17v.

EE here as well.... but rusty.

BTW, redsunx is wrong. That would be shorting the +12v and +5v circuitry... the results are unpredictable and possibly damaging depending on PSU design. It however would definitely not be +17v.
Once again...
