Heatsink Lapping? - Page 2

Yes, by all means lap it. It WILL help, unless you grind off like 1mm+ and actually manage to damage a heatpipe. But unless you're lapping it with a belt sander, I don't see that happening. I lapped a HS that I have, although it was one with a heat spreader. Lapping a cheap-ish HDT HS is probably even more beneficial than lapping anything else, as you are most likely to have a uneven surface.

Now where can i find a lapping kit worth buying? smile.gif

read that guys post and he tells you what grid paper to buy...i think start with 200/400/600/800/1000/1500 and work your way up to 2000

Lapping kits are way over priced, just go to a hardware store (or lowes/home depot) and pick up 5-8 sheets of silicon carbide paper (it'll be black). I would recommend starting with something along the lines of:

150/200 grit (two sheets)
400/600 grit (two sheets)
800 (one sheet)
1200 (one sheet) optional, no real benefit over stopping at 800
1500 (one sheet) same
2000 (one) only if you want a mirror finish, which is for bragging rights. (not trying to discourage you tongue.gif)
2500 (one)

Put it on a piece of glass, use some masking tape on the corners of it, put a few drips of oil on the paper (petroleum based), and slowly grind away. Don't rush, this doesn't need to be done in one evening. You go fast, and you risk grinding a convex surface on to your HS, which is... not good.

Then lap your CPU thumb.gif

use the black (i think) cover that came originally on the cpu if you still have it.

What he said, put the black square piece of foam on the back, and carefully press it on to the pins enough to make it stick. Be careful, bend a pin and you need a new processor. Especially with the processor, more so than with the HS, you need to be careful not to grind it convex, go slowly and make sure you keep it flat.
