Any general advice for vmodding?

As the title states I'm just after some general tips or anything you dudes have for vmodding. I've read up on a few guides and know exactly what I need to solder and where it needs to go, but in practice I've found I'm not so good at soldering.

 

My previous 8800 GTS card died during the vmem mod because I had slightly bridged solder and it had hit another connection, instantly killing the card when I turned it on. I clean the area I'm going to be soldering on with alcohol before starting (and letting it dry of course) but I still find the solder doesn't stick to the surface very well and ends up being a pain to solder to. I've also found that a lot of the time my connections break and become useless.

 

Are there any little trips or tricks you guys have to help you along or is it really just a case of practice makes perfect?

I know to tin the tip of the soldering iron and such, so I thought I was doing it right, but I'm definitely doing something wrong. I'm finding the whole thing quite difficult to do with just 2 hands to be honest.

 

I have another 8800GTS sitting infront of me now begging to be modded, but I certainly don't want to be killing another one.

For small joints, once you have tinned your iron add a tiny blob of solder to the end, as tiny as you can manage. Hold your wire in one hand and press it against the joint you are soldering to, then press the iron with the tiny amount of solder against the wire. If you have enough heat, the solder on the joint should flow, and the little on the end of the iron should come off. Pull the iron away and hold the wire in place for a few seconds to let the solder solidify.

Adding a small amount of liquid flux to a joint before hand can really help if you are having trouble. Flowing joints once before soldering anything to them just by adding a little solder can help too.

Try not to use big blobs of solder, for most joints, as little as you can manage to get on your iron is usually enough.

If you are soldering to big planes such as ground or core voltages, you will need a lot of heat. Iron probably as hot as it will go and a big tip.

Yes, practice helps a great deal. Maybe searching for some videos may help with technique too.

To check for shorts before powering on the card, measure continuity across power planes before and after doing every mod. If the resistance drops drastically, check your connections closely. I find a magnifying glass and a spot light help a great deal here.

Thanks a bunch mate, I'll take that right on board and have a few practice runs before taking the solder iron to my next card.

I like to do vgpu then bench and then do vmem...... vmem kills alot of cards even if done right but tuned too quickly. You can alos use liquid tape to hold down your wires after making your conections so when the move the pressure is on the tape and not the solder joint. Rubber eraser works too and super glue works the best but superglue is a huge pain in the ass to clean if you solder the wrong point. Also make sure you have your vr on there pretty good before hand so when you tune it stays put. If you are having problems with bridging connections you can surround everything but what you want to solder with regular tape and then solder to help protect the other connections. The tape will melt so its not 100 percent safe but gives you a lil fail safe.


Good luck If you need to buy another card try and look for one with nice easy mod points to start on. Like 9800gtx+ has nice easy points for vgpu

Thanks for the advice guys, I managed to pull the vgpu mod off pretty easily and the 8800GTX was working without issue. I mounted the waterblock and all of a sudden it just artifacted (stock voltage, was just testing) and appears to be dead. frown.gif

 

Here's an image of what's happening:

Is anybody able to offer an explanation as to what might have caused it?

Only had 1.35v going through it and was hooked up to chilled water. Though you could be right on the bad mount part. I hadn't even managed to get to the OS before it happened the first time, it was pretty much an instant process.

Oh.. those GPU's have exposed cores right? I hope you didnt crack the core or chip a corner when mounting the block.. Lord knows that has killed a few of my GPU's before redface.gif sadly i suspect it though based on your statement.

I don't think it is an exposed core, definitely looks like it has an IHS. I can't see any damage or such. Here's a pic of it with some insulation:

This has got me really stumped, it's clearly gone, but I can't understand why.
