Sony cuts PS3 price for Japan - Page 2

Thx for the wiki.

So basically its a better, faster connecter for HD content to your TV, but can it be that much better in quality than what they were gonna offer before?

I still can't find it. But I did find this:
Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi, speaking at the Tokyo Game Show in Makuhari, just east of Tokyo, said the move was in response to consumer complaints the upcoming console was too pricey.
Maybe if we whine some more, the price will drop here as well! But it does seem that Sony cares a lot more about the japanese market than the US.

The HDMI is great because if the movie producers want they can initiate a flag that will downrez a blue ray movie to a little better than a dvd over component since its not a digital connection. HDMI is compliant with the flag so no downrezzing. So before if you were going to use the PS3 as a blue ray player you had to get the expensive one. Looks like I may get one after all.

EDIT here is the link to the HDMI announcement.

Yeah but remember microsoft also said they would be cheaper than the PS3 with their HD-DVD add on. So IF sony decides to cut the small PS3's price here too Microsoft is going to have to be called a liar on one of them. You can bet it won't be the one saying they will be cheaper than the PS3.

In a way this is bad news. Sony had originally said that they would delay implementing the HDMI requiring DRM into the Blu-Ray so that the cheaper PS3 could play movies, but now there is nothing to stop them from making HDMI manditory.

Oh well not like Im gonna ever blow a bunch of money on that Blu-DRM stuff anyway.

Well, let's agree to adopt the opposite perspective. This down-ressing does not make HDMI great; it makes the DRM on next-gen movie discs asinine and anti-consumer. Everyone say it with me: DRM sucks, and death to all companies pushing new DRM schemes down our throats!

Seriously, I'm at the point where I no longer care to buy any of their freaking products. I never watch the DVDs I buy more than once or twice anyway; between the higher prices for next-gen movies and now all this DRM crap, they are pretty much talking me out of buying any of their crap.

Nah, there are a few ways to spin it.

1. Microsoft can easily claim that the $479 price point of a core X360 + HD-DVD was cheaper than Sony's original price point. The fact that Sony lowered the price point only demonstrates that Sony made a mistake in the first place, while Microsoft was in the right ball park all along.

2. I am confident that the low-end PS3 will not debut in the US at $410. A safe guess would be $450, which Microsoft could reasily match if they really thought it was a problem. But there is still a good possibility of the original $499, and we should assume that this holds true until Sony makes an announcement to the contrary. In which case, Microsoft is still correct.

3. Finally, and this is the big one: even the hard-drive equipped X360 + a HD-DVD, at $579, is going to be ridiculously cheap compared to the high-end PS3. Since there is no retail price for that PS3 in Japan, resellers are free to charge whatever they want for it. Given the expected demand by the rabid Japanese Playstation fanboys, and the precedents set by the X360 on EBay last year, anyone thinking they will get the good PS3 for less than $579 is on some serious drugs. That bad boy is going to be expensive out of the gate.

Let them, for all I care. One more feather in the HD-DVD cap: no HDMI requirement for a few more years. Die, Blu-Ray, die.

I'm not clear on how this movie business works, but if I was thinking like a producer, I would want my movie on a DRM disc.

I am in no way saying I like DRM's. It is going to be a fact of life though. With every new media there will be new protection schemes. Then there will be cracks and so on. Personally I hope they never start downrezzing the discs. It does seem the blue ray plans on implementing first though since the 360's HD-DVD is still going to use component.
