Soundcard vs receiver. - Page 2

Depends on what you listen to. Music for me is spdif, but gaming is to harsh for my B&W's so I use cans. The only sound fields hdmi offers that optical/spdif doesn't are DTS Master Audio and TrueHD.(if your receiver supports it).

its so confusing, i have 2 ways of using the speakers, HDMI or Optical for the 5.1
ofc optical cant do true 5.1 it has to use dts or ddl

and headphones i can use the sound card, or the receiver with the jack adaptor. i may use the headphones on the sound card simply for dolby headphones.

but i would think HDMI via the gpu wouldnt sound any different then spdif via the soundcard, but for some odd reason spdif via the soundcard is almost twice as loud

also i did forget if i use headphones with the soundcard, i can use ASIO lol

Well it's not like you can hear 5.1 or 7.1 channels through your head phones anyway and Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio only really apply if you're watching Blu-rays.

lol sitting here testing the headphones on receiver and sound card, and then testing speakers with spdif from soundcard and hdmi from the graphics card. -__- im liking the soundcard for the headphones only because i can ASIO

i havent tested with asio via spdif to speakers yet tho

something tells me that none of this probably matters and placebo affecting everything lol

Very likely. Maybe ask someone else to have a listen for you? I would just go with whatever way is most convenient for you if you can't tell the difference.

The more I visit Head-fi, the more I realize it's full of useless people. I see better recommendations on OCN which isn't even an audio centered community than I do at Head-fi. I only use head-fi anymore for headphone reviews from knowledgeable people.

I saw your post on HF and at the time the only person that responded was "try them all."

Sorry, but I don't have a better answer for you as I've never heard the DAC in that receiver. I would hope it's better than the DX though and it would make things easier since it has all the connections and powers your speakers.

I doubt the Xonar has a burr brown dac like the Yamaha. Savory. I would let the receiver do all the processing.. motherboard>optical/hdmi>receiver with no bs processing in between. I think my computer is the best source of music on my system.

EDIT: the D2X is the one with the TI Burr Brown PCM1796 Dac. smile.gif

hmm so faar all i know is spdif is louder...how to i setup 5.1 with HDMI? do i just select straight? or do i do movie 5.1, when i do movie standard 5.1 it still applies some dsp, idk how to put on the "auto setting" so i've been using straight

also if i use hdmi from one of my gpus or spdif from the sound card, isn't it still using the burr brown dacs in the Receiver? i'm pretty sure using the optical spdif cable i'm not using my sound cards dac lol, spdif is just louder.
