Question(s) about the Android OS/scene.

EDIT: The original post will be updated since the topic has gotten more posts/pages.

I plan to initially just root the phone and run custom scripts like Speedy v7, V6Supercharger or 3GSupercharger, etc. for the time being. Does anyone know the reqiurements behind these scripts? The devs usually put them up in their requirements (IE: BusyBox Version XXX) but just to be sure, do I need to do other hacks to my phone? I remember reading stuff about init.d, which reminds me of Linux when you want certain things to run on startup. Do I need to do something with init.d to run these scripts? Finally, what is everyone's favorite scripts to run in unison together, that are "universal"? Speedy V7 seems to be the one that everyone runs, but I'm not too sure about the other scripts. A lot of the posts are pretty vague when talking about these scripts and just say "increases performance"...but what aspect of performance? Well, that's why I'm asking here what all of you run. Also, are there any other scripts that are nice to run outside of performance ones? I've heard of ones for battery life/fixes and stuff. Thanks!

I haven't rooted and installed a custom OS, but as far as I'm concerned, the only reason I'd really care about doing so is the ability to get rid of the crapware that comes with provider handsets.

Otherwise, nothing that people do after rooting and installing a different OS appeals to me. Then again, I'm a bit more utilitarian, in that I want a phone to function, and don't really care much that I can sideload x number of apps, or overclock, or access quasi-illegal apps, etc.

Custom rom's are completely worth it.

ICS roms will roll out soon. Look at Cyanogen Mod.

And rooting really isn't a big deal. If you like technology and you own an android you may as well learn it best by rooting it and customizing the hell out of it.

I don't even own an android phone and i grabbed a back up someone had and messed around with it. Quite easy stuff. I even compiled a custom program so it could teather with ubuntu. tongue.gif

Well I do not have the phone yet, and according to Verizon it comes with Android 2.2.2 (Froyo with Motorola Software)....what I'm wondering when I first recieve this phone after I order it past the 13th is, will I be able to do a simple update to get "Gingerbread", or do I have to go through a complex process to update it? I've got zero experience with smartphones so this may sound simple/dumb, but I'd like to know the answer smile.gif

I think I'm going to end up rooting it and downloading custom software. I looked up at Cyanogen Mod and there seems to be none for the X2, so I'll probably look at other ROMs.

There should be a lot of youtube "how to" videos that go through the step-by-step process for it. But there isn't a super-simple "one-click" method. Generally you need to root, then go through some setting changes, download the ROM you want to load, go through some more steps (and hope all goes well). Not impossible, but not dummy-proof.

Well gingerbread is cool and all, but ice cream sandwhich is where its at.

You can leave it at froyo or update to gingerbread on the Motorola updates, but all you have to do is root the phone, back up your moto rom and install a custom one.

Just wondering, is there a way to cancel automatic updates so I don't accidentally download a new software/ROM and lose root?

Also, I hear the Motorola software sucks so I'm definitely going to root it. Any differences between Froyo/Gingerbread? I see custom ROMs based off of both of them, and I'm not actually sure which one's are the best. I'd like to get "ICS" but it doesn't seem to be out for the Droid X2....yet.

If you root go with gingerbread its worth it. I dont know if CM7 suports your phone but if it does its my favorite custom ROM.

Yeah it doesn't. I only see it available for the Droid X....

EDIT: Anyways I edited the OP. I've decided that I'll root my phone, but wondering what stuff I should do when my phone arrives to prep it in general, and prep it for rooting.

I don't know if this is in your budget.

I am going to order my phones from amazon from now on, you can't beat their deals, plus no tax.
