3 DVI displays to 7970?

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
My 3 2365wb only have DVI & VGA.

If I get a 7970 will I be able to straight away use all 3 DVI's of my displays without buying a active displayport adaptor?

Along with HD7970 is Eyefinity 2.0.  Despite all the new features of the 2.0, the requirement of using Display Port remains.

A reference HD7979 has one DVI, one HDMI and two mini DP outputs.

So, you will have to use the DVI output for monitor 1, a HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable for monitor 2 and a miniDP-to-DVI adapter cable for monitor 3.

The card will come out next week.  It is reported that one active miniDP-to-DVI adapter is included.  So, you will not need to buy one.

Thank for your post, +rep given.

I also want to connect HDMI to projector, so are these active miniDP-to-DVI adapter wery expensive as I need 2 of them.

I just checked Amazon and seems like displayport to DVI has dropped alot in price.
Is there any good mini dp to DVI?

This is only for mac(?)

I prefer to use dongles approved by AMD, if available.  Here is the list:-

http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx

(Dongles not of this list are also known to work.  I am currently using a Sapphire DP-to-DVI single link cable as I cannot find those in the list in my local stores.  The price of these cables have not dropped much.  Dual link capable ones are still expensive at 3 to 4 times the price of a single link one.  But as you do not go over 1920x1200, single link is enough.)

For active single link miniDP-to-DVI, the Accell B087B-006B is temporarily out of stock with Amazon UK.

But, the Star Tech MDP2DVIS is available:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-Mini-DisplayPort-Active-Adapter/dp/B004SUELLC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325664113&sr=1-1

Then, it can be like:

(1) card's DVI output -->DVI-to-DVI cable--> 1st 2365WB's DVI input

(2) card's mini DP output --> miniDP-to-DVI adapter (come free with card) -->DVI-to-DVI cable --> 2nd 2365WB's DVI input

(3) card's mini DP output --> miniDP-to-DVI adapter (buy the Star Tech adapter above) -->DVI-to-DVI cable --> 3rd 2365WB's 3 DVI input

(4) card's HDMI output --> HDMI-to-HDMI cable --> projector's  HDMI input

If your current monitors setup has no issues with screen tearing or flickering, you should be fine to use all the adapters come with 7970.

Monitor #1, DVI > DVI > 7970.

Monitor #2, DVI > DVI-HDMI cable > 7970 (comes with the card).

Monitor #3, DVI > DVI-Mini DP Active Adapter > 7970 (comes with the card).

Will AMD provide a mini dp to HDMI?

In that case I could connect projector --- > HDMI cable --> mini dp to hdmi --> 7970 mini dp

Problem is the HDMI cable is 15 meter and provides perfect picture 720p, however maybe I won't get that with all the adapters and 15 meter cable?

I don't think MiniDP to HDMI cable will be included because 7970 has one HDMI port. As far as Eyefinity goes, it only supports 2 legacy devices and 7970 has 2 legacy ports, ie., DVI and HDMI. Adding the MiniDP to HDMI adapter cable is not going to support Eyefinity.

Your above plan will not work because you will be using more than 2 legacy devices.

7970 has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI and 2 miniDP.

Projector, HDMI > HDMI to miniDP adapter > 7970 (legacy).

Monitor #1, DVI > DVI > 7970 (legacy).

Monitor #2, DVI > DVI to HDMI > 7970 (legacy).

Monitor #3, DVI > DVI to miniDP active Adapter > 7970.

The only configuration that will work;

Projector, HDMI > HDMI > 7970 (legacy).

Monitor #1, DVI > DVI > 7970 (legacy).

Monitor #2, DVI > DVI to miniDP active Adapter > 7970.

Monitor #3, DVI > DVI to miniDP active Adapter > 7970.

Just get the 50 feet HDMI quality cable and be done with it.

And get only one of this adapter guarantee to work or you are willing to venture other model with hit and miss.
