The dumber and less involved a game can be, the better for sales.

You can't-not link it back to consoles. They are easier to use, cheaper to buy, appeal to the couch audience and because of that - print money.
I don't think it's because the type of people who like in-depth games is shrinking, I think it's because the consoles are just enough graphically and functionally to entice all types of people to game once in a while. The publishers go to where the grass is the greenest, like in any type of industry.

Sorry if this has been said before in the thread but I think we late twenties and early thirties guys are, pretty picky aboutt the quality of the games we like. Having grown up playing some legendary stuff has honestly spoiled us. The next generation of gamers has different indices and measures of quality and since they are the largest consumer segment, the manufacturers are catering to them. I am quite happy that there are at least some developers who churn out quality to cater to us old timers. Mass effect, tekken, god of war, deus ex, ortal, elder scrolls, counter strike are just some titles that keep improving (yes I have had the great fortune to try a pre-release beta of g0, can't say how). Here's to old school gaming, when skill of the hand and the keen of the brain actually mattered
just my 2 cents worth.

the reason I think why they are getting worse is because the dev's want a game out pretty much 1yr after the previous they made. eg. the cod series, because of this fast turn around time on the game's they have been neglecting the game it self and the community imho. I remember back quite a few years ago the production of the games would take longer but you would get a game that ran great from day1, no need to have near as much patch's and everyone enjoyed the games more.

I will admit there is a lot of wishing for games like we grew up with my generation we had the Super NES/Genisus then the PS 1 and then the PS 2 and then multiplayer PC games on the internet which was a new thing at the time which only a few could afford a PC and internet connection and experience what we haf at the time we had Quake, Counter Strike and Call of Duty 1. We was a small group of players called hardcore gamers or nerds at the time. To sell games to us we expected to have VOIP and to be able to Spectate matches. I brought TF2 when Valve first released it cause I had played CS and new the Source engine would make a great game with TF2. Want to know when I stopped playing, last year after putting over 200 hours into it when trading was brought into the game and the shop because it ruined the core game, I Traded my Vintage hats and never went back. When console like the first Xbox started making it possible for cross platform games to be made and a large return on a game the innervation and dedication to please the gaming comunity went out the window for the cold hard cash.

SC2 is great smile.gif

Why are they getting worse? For the same reason that music and movies did, there is a massive Publisher/Record Company/Studio behind the developer that wants money.

I'm still waiting for a post apocalyptic base building FPS RPG. Sort of like completely free roam Borderlands with red faction style destruction.

It's always about the money.

Consoles are influencing gaming in a negative way. It's why i don't game on consoles out of principle unless it's Nintendo or old glassics (pre-Gamecube). And it's also why i buy all of my PC games.

There have been some decent PC releases though that truely have pushed the boundaries. Just look at Amnesia - Indie dev reviving a dying genre with fresh idea's.

It's a shame but now you can pretty much guarantee a recycled experience with any well known dev/publisher behind it. Who seem to rather throw money at ad campaigns then anything else, and a unique gaming experience suffers for it.

Indie devs, it's where it's at. alot of these well established developers are past their sell-by date. (With a few exceptions)

QFT. EA is guilty of doing this. One of my most hated Publishers. Any and every game is just a means of revenue to them.

Don't get me wrong SC2 has provided hours of entertainment but I'm still holding on to the principal that we should be seeing evolution not devolution. After all... we are the paying consumers.

Mm, yes, brand new system... new 560ti 448 GPU... and what do I play? I've been playing Killing Floor, Morrowind, The Binding of Issac, Super Meat Boy, and the XCom games. -sigh-

PS: I did pick up Saints Row the Third, and it was pretty good and funny. Just FYI.

PPS: There are some adjectives in our languge which do not have comparative or superlative forms. More stupid or most stupid is used rather than stupider or stupidest. There is no such word as beautifuler, either, although I have heard it said. "Perfect" and "unique" are in a class by themselves. Nothing can be more perfect or more unique than something else. It is correct to say "more nearly perfect" or "more nearly unique"
