Why all the Bulldozer hate?!? - Page 9

The main reason I dislike bulldozer is because it was way over hyped and having a lot of AMD users saying my rig is going to get bulldozed etc etc and then it comes out and it's a joke. It was a good swing but a miss. There is no reason to not buy a 2500k for $200 which is a GREAT price for a cpu (I remember buying my 965 BE for $190 a few years ago) out of the box and the fact that it can overclock by over 25% is just INSANE. Intel struck gold with Sandybridge so why not take advantage of it until AMD can release a CPU that is better than Intel (or at least better than their previous gen lol). For all the people saying "Well it does everything I want perfectly so it's good and 2500k is just overkill." Why would you pay the same as or more than a 2500k to get much worse performance? Sure you want to support AMD but is it really worth spending that much money on a low performing CPU? I am impartial to brand names - I care about $ / performance and currently Intel is where you're going to get the best ratio.

Why would someone buy a CPU that is performing poorly for it's price to wait for "optimization" that you have no idea how much it's going to increase. It would make sense to buy a 2500k for the same price or less for a much better $ / performance ratio.

"Is it because the new bulldozer chips were meant to perform better than the i7's? and in reality it doesn't seem they can without some serious overclocking?"

you answered yourself right there. and in reality even with some serious OC it is not 100% on par with the i7s. remember OC BD cpu may equal a regular stock i7, but then i7s can OC mad also....so its diff. category of comparison.

the fx 8150 is only on par with the i5-2500k and cost 50 dollars more. while its 50 dollars less than i7, but it not close to its performance at all.

The single core score maybe high but it's MP ratio is low it's like 4.81 usually for SB 2600K
Bulldozer MP ratio is too low for what it is around 6.6-6.7 when it should be 7.2.

The MP Score is low because the parallelization was hand coded for the i7 990X with AVX functions for future CPUs

The next Cinebench that is due will most likely be hand-coded for 8C or more or will have auto-parallelization

Cinbench for the longest time has followed the releases of the Cinema4D version

Cinebench ended that at R11.5 with Cinema4D R12 and R13 just rolling by

According to AMD, Windows 8 will more intelligently align threads so that, when they can benefit from sharing a module, they will. The implication is that when two threads can be consolidated onto one module (despite the fact that they’re forced to share resources), putting an entire module to sleep and potentially enabling a higher p-state (a faster Turbo Core setting) outweighs any performance penalty tied to sharing.

Don't know what that means but I think AMD was trying to come up with something to sell chips. I do support AMD and my last 3 builds have been AMD but I passed on BD myself because of performance issues and went with the 1100T. I'm really thinking that Piledriver will be better just because it has to be. The PD will be the make it or break it chip that could put AMD back in the green or sink it forever. thumb.gif

Have you not read through the thread?
BD has FMA4,which almost nothing uses right now,it is up to the devs to code FMA4 into software, half of those 4/6/8 cores aren't really "cores" either, which do need further optimizations to work in software.

All of the cores in Bulldozer are cores HMG

FMA4 is in every C++ Compiler except for ICC
With Windows 8 forcing vectorization of FMA3 and FMA4 Bulldozer is a lot better off than Intel who is going for a weak homogeneous design

I think bashing on a completely new architecture that's a departure from what we've seen up to now is a little unfair, the FX 4100 is significantly cheaper than a i5 or i7 and so are the am3+ based boards. I went i5 because I wanted the best performance per pound I could affor d right now, if bulldozer was cheaper than it is it'd be a real contender. Keeping my eye on AMD in the future, if i ever build a secondary rig it'll be am3 for cost reasons so i'm not biased towards intel just because thats what i bought.

That may have been a little disjointed but hopefully my point came across.
