And God forbid if there were any sort of fire, by seperating the two machines, there is less of a chance of both being destroyed.
Hmm. Good to know. Don't remember seeing any other sticker on the RAM but I didn't look too hard. Will check when I get home from work.

I guess by your logic I am pretty much cooked with 10PC's in my bedroom.

Eh. With all of my dad's geneology stuff I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've been meaning to set up their computer to just back everything up to my computer and vice versa, but I haven't gotten around to it.. It's really mostly about the my siblings/animals. They are more likely to spill water somewhere or just knock something over than a fire.

Luckily they have a small NAS drive in their basement so everything is backed up. They went ahead and just bought a new computer. The old computer was an HP that was bought from Best Buy four to five years ago. Since then they've never had the computer serviced or anything, asside from me occasionally fixing a small software problem. Now, I've never really looked at the hardware, because honestly I've never cared, and it didn't really concern me. It worked fine for my parents, and that's all I cared about.
Well when they got the new computer, they let me gut the old one. And I'm not sure if this means anything but here is the original sticker still on the side of the case..
photobucket-3088-1325684703494.jpg
And here is the RAM (four sticks) found in the computer:
photobucket-2118-1325684656818.jpg
Am I wrong in thinking there should be five gigs? Which is a pretty weird number as it is. The sticker on the RAM claims 512 megs.
Also, the HDD only is a 500 gig drive, not the 750 that the sticker shows.
photobucket-4473-1325684745799.jpg
Am I just missing something? Is that sticker the "max" that you can get if you payed an extra couple hundred bucks? I wish I caught this when the computer was still new..... Thanks for anyone who can put my mind at ease..

lol first off never buy from best buy they sell refurbish pc's as brand new computers and i think hp adds up the video memory with the system memory even if the video memory takes from your system memory which notice on picture the hybrid sli makes no sence but i have seen a lot of hp computers where the memory spec and hard drive spec is wrong as for the hard drive being wrong i believe it is because they add the hp media drive thing to the hard drive space Evan if you don't have the media drive but in your picture you only show one memory stick which could mean you have 2x512mb and 2 x2gb which would give you 5gbs

Honestly I would start at BB, my friend got an alienware from them and they shorted him 2gb of ram. Once I showed him how to look up his PC stats I informed him that he didn't have what he payed for. That day he called the geek squad and they came over and gave him the ram and cleaned his PC.

Yes. If I were there, I would have advised differently. Unfortunately, most of the general public can't or won't be troubled to build their own pc. Just like I know I could probably change the oil in my car, but I'll save myself the hassle and bring it somewhere. The only place around them to buy one is BB or Wal Mart, and my parents don't like shopping there.

For that first part, if that is so, like someone else said that is some huge false advertising. If soemthing says there is x gigs, there better be! I don't care about potential, just like most others! If that's the case then I'll pay someone $500 instead of $600 and say "Well, it COULD be $600." biggrin.gif As for the ram, never thought of that. I'll have to check the other sticks closer, but I'd be very surprised if it were 2x512 and 2x2, just because four years ago, getting 2x2gb sticks was probably expensive (and I don't think my parents spent an arm and a leg on this pc, but I could be wrong. Tomorrow will tell more once I see the receipt)!

Eh. I think first I'll try HP. Just because as of right now, I'm in Kansas and my parents (who still have the case for the HP) are in NY. So it would be a lot of hassle (and more money than it's worth) to send everything back so it can be assembled for an out of date pc. I'll just have to see what my options are. It would be nice to get a 750 gig hdd just because nowadays that extra 250 gigs would be useful to me (and I was sort of counting on it..) and I can always find use for some ddr2 ram.

I had a friends computer I worked on (A HP media center system from ~ 2006) that had a Cooler Master HSF on it. I was suprised also.

Yea, I opened it up and was surprised. It actually turned out to be the mount for the southbridge on the board had broken and apparently overheated.
