Lucid Virtu - Good or Bad?

Hey all,

Im running a 2600K on a Asus P8z68 PRO Gen 3 Mobo. I also have a GTX560 Ti discrete graphics card.

I haven't bothered with Virtu so far, but decided to look into it. After a bit of research, i noticed that some say that there is a small drop in gaming performance caused due to Virtu, not to mention the difficulties with setting up new games.

Apart from the transcoding gains, and a little bit of energy saving is there any real reason to use Virtu. Is it worth all the hassle?? and is support for new games added fairly quickly?

I dont know if this true but the perfomance drop depends on which adapter you use, the one the mb or the one on the gpu, tried it, spotted no difference. Btw Should my discrete graphics turn off completely when i disable it using iMODE, because for it didnt and continued to spin so there was no point of virtu for me:)

Difficulties with setting up new games?
I only touch the Virtu Control panel when it says there is an update.

Well, i know for a fact that the discrete card does not turn off. It just goes into idle state. So it will be on for all practical purposes.

I have found virtu to be the most useless thing I have yet (for me at least).

As you say games perform worse with it enabled but worst of all it can't even do what I t was mainly designed for. The idea was to run off you iGPU while your graphics were idling to save power. Even though it does do this, your main graphics card is still turned on and still using juice. Therefore your system is still using the same amount of power, if not more because it is now running you discreet card and the iGPU!

As for transcoding. Yes it does perform well but not many programs are supported.

EDIT: removed a link as I am unsure if im allowed to link to other forums redface.gif

But 570 goes to idle anyway so it is useless?

To fully appreciate Virtu, you are supposed to connect your monitor to your dGPU and use it in dMode. With iMode, you will suffer gaming performance lost. Even then you aren't saving power because dGPU is still idling.

To me Virtu is meant to be used when you need Quick Sync, or that your dGPU is crunching and you need to play a simple 2D game from iGPU.

I find the igpu of sandy useful for the fact that I crunch on the 470 I have.
When I have it enabled Aero runs on igpu and YouTube runs on igpu and videos with dxva runs on igpu so those things don't interfere with the crunching.
If I wouldn't the interface would lag and so on.
