3930K Throttling Issue With Settings Which Previously Worked

Thread Starter
I'm having an issue with my Core i7-3930K where the CPU appears to be throttled. Temperatures don't go above the high 50s or low 60s. I am using the same settings that worked previously. Previously my temperatures would reach the low 80s and I would get 195+ GFlops under LinX 0.6.4 with updated Linpack. Now using the same settings, I had saved a profile only difference is I have since re-installed Windows, I am only getting 100 GFlops and no more than 61 degrees under load. According to CPU-Z my processor is running at 4500 MHz and adjusting the voltages doesn't help. These settings were stable previously.

I've tried changing a bunch of different settings but nothing has helped. I've disabled the Intel Thermal Monitoring, SpeedStep, C1E, C-States, VRM Thermal Protection, tried both enabling and disabling HyperThreading, as well as increasing Current Capability settings to the maximum. I even tried the ThrottleStop utility to no avail. I'm not sure what to try next. I could try messing with voltages some more but these settings were running fine before. This happened with both the 906 BIOS which previously worked fine and 1005 BIOS which I recently updated to.

Anyone have any ideas? Why would I see 195+ GFlops and 80 degree temperatures before but only see 100 GFlops and 60 degree temperatures now? My CPU is reporting 100% load but it appears to be throttled somewhere. Here's a screenshot, ignore the 1200 MHz as my CPU is idle and clocked itself down there. It runs at and shows 4500 MHz under load but even when I disable that feature I have the same issue.

Oh gawd!! I had this issue a while ago with my 2600K. If I remember what my problem was I'll let you know. Might not be the same issue but you never know thumb.gif

Edit: Nope sorry. Just remembered and mine was completely different. Mine was throttling due to high temps when I was abusing it!

On closer inspection it would appear you do not have hyper threading enabled. You only got 6 threads active (says it at the bottom of your LinX window).

I tried with Hyperthreading both enabled and disabled. No difference but I had 195 GFlops before with Hyperthreading disabled.

This overclock ran fine for 4 weeks previously. I don't exactly have any space for another fan. I have 7 in my case already, none smaller than 120mm. I have a 160mm side panel fan, while it isn't exactly directed at this area it is probably the best I can do in my liquid cooled Fractal Design Arc Midi. More fans is always better but I don't have any more space in my case. Will I seriously not be able to overclock my CPU without throttling using liquid cooling and 7 case fans due to VRM temperatures?

I had zero issues overclocking to 4800 MHz for the first three weeks after building this system and I don't think I even had all the air bubbles out of my loop yet. Why would it start throttling all of a sudden with the same exact settings that ran fine previously? Ambient temperatures are cooler now than before but this isn't a CPU overheating issue as my core temperatures don't go above 60 degrees C. No idea why it would start doing this all of a sudden.

Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

Have you got the very latest version of LinX (with AVX enabled)? Get it here =http://www.gigaflopd.com/downloads/linx/]

From what I can find it is best to leave speedstep, C1E, C states and thermal protection on unless you are going for extreme overclocking. For best LinX results leave hyper threading off for these chips or leave it on and only use 6 threads in LinX. Disabling spread spectrum will help as well but only slightly.

I don't know what overclocking or LinX experience you have so don't be offended if you think I'm pointing out the obvious but have you disabled all unnecessary process' in task manager and made sure no scheduled tasks or scans are running? What about your PC's power state? Is it set to balanced or power saver or something like that? If all you did was reinstall windows and the BIOS was left untouched then it would suggest that it is something on the OS side of things.

Test out your PSU then it could be the culprit. but you can just try to toss a fan over the VRm see if it makes any difference, just for the tests. How do you know it is throttling? do you run Prime95 every few days or somthing?

I have the latest version available which should be AVX enabled. I'll double check but I have the same issue with Intel Burn Test. Power setting is high performance in Windows. Connected to a dual conversion/online APC UPS but it reports as being on AC power or plugged in under Windows.

I will try putting a fan directly over the area. As for testing the PSU, all my voltages report within an acceptable range. I only have a 700w OCZ PSU from my previous build. I can try swapping it out to see if it makes any difference.

Update: Running LinX again and my temperature readings seem to be about what they were previously under RealTemp GT 3.66. They're actually a little bit better at only high 60s C versus the high 70s C and one core at 85 C I saw before. Ambient is only a few degrees F cooler. GFlops reading has also increased back to what it should be. I am getting 190~191 GFlops on LinX 0.6.4 with maximum memory usage. Pretty sure it was right around there before, I know it usually was 19x.xxxx something with hyperthreading OFF. Not sure what caused the quirk. I had my system shut off for a few hours and when I came back and turned it on it was back to what it should be.

For reference this image below shows what I was seeing before with hyperthreading ON. My VCore here was 1.360 V but now I set Load-Line Calibration to Medium and reduced the voltage to 1.336 V under load. This is a very fast processor which is a great and easy chip to overclock! thumb.gif

Hi @Improvidus,
ok it is an old thread rolleyes.gif but, how did u got 195gflops on 4500mhz?
do u remember details or even still using this machine?

I have a ga-x79-ud3 with an E5-1650 @ 4300mhz with 165gflops peak and single core 31gflops
my ram can also do 2133 10101027T2 or 2400 10121230T2 ithink or at least 13131335T2
post #9 of 10
Try using LinX and try using different versions of the Linpack library. Stasio at TweakTown maintains a nice list.

https://forums.tweaktown.com/printthread.php?t=30530&s=a7a0d88cc85c3eda18ceef228603fa9a&pp=10&page=1

With Linpack testing, usually turning off hyper threading so CPU-Z shows 6 Cores - 6 Threads will give you the best results.
ty for explanation. if any version shows better results ok, but I was looking for something different.
was just not sure, but probabely my cpu at 4500mhz will be 99% the same speed on same application.
deactivating HT is not needed I think, u can just set the thread number in the tool and if u watched my sreenie u might see 6 threads on IBT.
however my cpu can do 500gflops+ when I photoshop it.....biggrin.gif
