Water cooling Loop Question

Thread Starter
On my main rig I'm running two 360mm and one 240mm Rads, two Modded D5 pumps, Heat-Killer Water block, three Full Cover Danger Den GPU Water Blocks, EK Full Cover MB Block, and EK Ram Block. Currently my temps on the CPU seem to be high and I think it may be how the loop is configured, however I'm not 100% sure if that is the issue.

Here is my current setup:

Res > D5 > 240mm > Heat Killer CPU > 360mm Rad > D5 > GPU 1 > GPU 2 > GPU 3 (all in series) > 360mm Rad > MB Block > Ram Block > Res

My thinking on this setup is that my CaseLabs case mounts my 360mm Rads in the top of the case so the highest heat producing items should be dumping out the top. The 240mm is mounted in the bottom so it is pulling cool from under the case.

Right now I'm running 3/8" Tubing and thinking of upping this to 1/2" for better flow but can't afford the upgrade just now, Bitspower connectors are pricey. However either way with two modded D5's my flow rates should be good.

So I guess my question is that could the 240mm not be dropping temps enough?

Or maybe with the current OC my temps are as low as their going to get.

Running at 4.578Ghz 167 BCLK 27 Multiplier, VCore 1.399.

While folding my Max Core temp as reported by Real Temp is 77, eleet reports 60 for the CPU.

Not really sure if this is really an issue but these temps seem a little high. They got this high until I increased the BCLK to 167 so I know the CPU is running hotter. Honestly this 980X is probably on track for a melt down but had issues at lower voltages with the ram and such, this was the lowest stable voltages I could find.

What type of fans are you using and what type of rads? There are different types of rads and some work better with specific fans. Sounds like you have one heck of a rig!

You should be fine with the current setup but its all about airflow. The two D5's should work fine though

I don't know much about temperatures of the 1366 Extreme chips, but I will say that you have plenty of radiator space for your loop. The better thing to look at would be what fans are you currently running, and what configuration? Changing your tubing to 1/2" ID will improve flow slightly, but it will not be more than a degree of water temperature difference. To increase your flow, the cheapest and easiest method would be to switch to a parallel setup on your GPUs. What blocks are you using? Is there an option for a parallel SLI bridge so you don't need another 4 fittings?

You should be fine with the current setup but its all about airflow. The two D5's should work fine though

All fans in the setup are Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1850 RPM fans, all rads in Push - Pull, 8 additional case fans for airflow.

The 360mm Rads are Black Ice GTX Xtreme 360 Radiator and the 240mm is a Black Ice SR1. Once again all fans are Scythe Gentle Typhoon in push full, on a high amp fan controller at full speed. GPU blocks are Danger Den GTX 470 Full cover water blocks, tried them in parallel but temps went through the roof on the GPU's, not sure why just think these blocks aren't setup for it.

If I am understanding right you have just one loop with all your items being cooled. If thats the case why not split it up and run 2 loops? One for your gpu's and one for your CPU, Ram, Motherboard and such. I think you will be much happier with the temps. I am running a very close setup to you on 2 loops and at 4.4g on my 990x folding 24/7 I never see over 62c full load. My BCLK is 200 with a multi of 22 at 1.376v.

Curious, when there's two loops. Won't you need a second pump, res and rad??

Yes you would need at least one pump one rad one res one block for whatever you want to cool but as he stated above he already has 3 rads 2 pumps and a res. so for the most part all the OP would need to do is get another res and tubing and fittings to switch over to a 2 loop system.

I am running a very close setup to you on 2 loops and at 4.4g on my 990x folding 24/7 I never see over 62c full load. My BCLK is 200 with a multi of 22 at 1.376v.
Going from your 1.376v to his near 1.4v would add at least 5c to the temperature, likely a bit more. It also depends on how he uses his loop. If both the CPU and GPUs are all cranking away 100% at the same time, he might get slightly better CPU temps if it were in its own loop. If he only taxes the CPU or GPU independently (including gaming), then his 980mm of rad space is more than enough, by far.

Sorry, I'm a 'noob' when it comes to liquid rolleyes.gif Guess we all start somewhere.
He does have two pumps in series currently, at different points in the loop.

I didn't think that .023v would bring the temp up 5c that's my bad for being ignorant. good looking out.
I don't know much about the pumps the OP is using but why would his temps go through the roof going parallel on the gpus? Flow rate would be the only cause of that right as in being to slow through the cards parallel instead of series.

Flow rate is the only thing I can think of but it might be beneficial to break it up into two separate loops because of different taxing rates. That way if his processor is running on one 360 and his gpu's are running on the other 240 and 360 he should see somewhat better temps. If it's all on one loop then the temps mix with each other creating somewhat of a sloshy mix of things.
