8 person LAN party

Thread Starter
Say in the near future i will be hosting a 8 person LAN party. Now i have done this before with 4 people and i just used my router and then ported one to a 4 port switch, so we had internet. But it seems that this will not be as easy.

i know i will need to buy a switch, i know we will not be connected to the internet (unless i jimmy rig it)

My question to you is, if i buy just a switch and just connect it to everyone's PC. Will we be able to play games over LAN, such as left for dead, warcraft 3, Unreal tournament?

IIRC if you just use a switch, the packets will be forwarded based on mac addresses. you will lose out in the fact that you cant multicast or use IP multicasting thus frames are addressed to just one PC. all PCs might recive this frame but drop it if your mac address dosent match.

Alought this will work, i dont think it is great for a LAN party as for when you want IP multicasting so packets are sent between all PCs. so i would think a L3 switch would work better that is capable of IP multicasting.

this is off the top on my head, interested to what others say smile.gif

Hook it up to your router so each computer gets an IP via dhcp. Also make sure your dhcp range on ur router is big enough. You all could play online games, but it would be slow....

my router is a 4 port and i need one of them for the port for the switch so in total i have 7 ports in which i need one more.

When I have LAN party's (usually with 4 people actually biggrin.gif) I just go like this Modem>Router (with 4 ports)>Everyone's computers (Via Ethernet or Wireless, both work). Has always worked just fine with me, and everyone else in the house still uses the wireless without a single issue. And you can still do local games on it as well if you feel like it without unplugging or changing anything. In your case since you will be having 8 people you would probably just need a router with 8 ports, I believe I saw one once before. I'll go try to dig one up

Edit:

Yes that one should work just fine, I don't see why it wouldn't

yes in this method you would connect one switchport on the switch to a switchport on the router. pretty much know as "router on a stick" method smile.gif

Why the hell would you need multicast in this environment?

Any unmanaged switch will be fine.
It may be worth hanging a cheapy router off of the switch for the purpose of having a DHCP server.

So whats the best approach to an 8 person LAN - 4 port router, then a 6+ port switch?

PS: if i plugged port 1 from my router to port 1 on the 8 port switch...would it give ports 2-8 on the switch internet?

actually i thought maybe the concept of IP mulcasting/broadcasting streaming abilities would work well for gamming, guess i was wrong. cheers for pointing that out smile.gif

@OP this is the idea, any old router will do and all you need is a one switchport router or whatever you have lying arround for the purpose of a DHCP server.
you will connect this port to a port on the switch, everyone connects to the switch, maybe get a biger switch like a 16port
