Extreme low-end graphics showdown: Radeon x1600 Pro AGP vs. HD 5450 PCI?

This is kind of a stupid question, but I just got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 PCI (NOT PCI-E) graphics card for free and I was wondering if it would be any faster than the current one in my desktop, an ATI Radeon X1600 PRO AGP.

Granted, this is my backup computer which I bought 8 years ago and doesn't even have a PCI express slot. I'm not using this thing to try and play Battlefield 3; I've already got a high-end PC for that. I mainly use this older machine to do basic productivity and playing some older Directx 8 and Directx 9 games on the side such as Doom 3, Far Cry, and Half-Life 2. I can already play these games at medium to high settings on my monitor's native resolution and any boost with a free graphics card would be, well, a win. smile.gif

As far as I can tell, there isn't any info on a direct comparison between these two cards. They're four generations apart and ATI/AMD has changed the architecture many times since the X1000 series. The latest graphics hierarchy chart from Tom's Hardware lists them in the same tier, so they should theoretically have similar performance. The X1600 PRO has a 500 MHz core and 512 MB of DDR2 running at 800 MHz memory on a 128-bit bus while the 5450 has a 650 MHz core and 512 MB of DDR3 running at 1000 MHz on a 64-bit bus as well as 80 stream processors. It looks to me like the 5450 should have the upper hand based solely on clock speeds, but I don't know how to reduced memory bus will factor into overall performance. And I doubt that the PCI bus is any slower than the AGP bus as far as these two cards are concerned.

What do you guys think? X1600 PRO AGP or 5450 PCI?

5450 is faster , PCI is more efficient and newer than AGP also .

AGP is old school

Do you have a PCI slot ? since your using AGP at the moment ..

Sorry champ , he would get better performance from the 5450 PCI over the older x1600 pro AGP .. Even though both of them are truely old and outdated i wouldnt even bother rolleyes.gif they would be close , but i bet the 5450 would pull ahead due to it being newer architecture .

Sell them both "if you can" and buy something semi decent ? much more worth it .

lolwut? You might be confusing PCI with PCI Express. PCI has been around since 1993. AGP is a significant improvement on PCI and was introduced in 1996 if I remember correctly. It was originally based on the PCI bus but is in fact specialized solely for GPU use (hence its acronym: Accelerated Graphics Port). A 4x AGP slot is capable of a little over 1GB/s transfer rate and is superior to PCI in every way for graphics card use.

I think some testing is in order but I would guess the x1600 might have better performance in a system like that. THe 5450 might be a faster card but would very limited by the PCI bus.

This! Got to it before I could. I agree in that the partially superior 5450 will be handicapped by the slot.
It's so little!

As per Scorpion49 about, the 5450 I have is conventional PCI, not PCI-express. I guess if you weren't born in the '90s you wouldn't even know that there was a difference! tongue.gif

I've already got a 5870 in my main computer. I just got this 5450 FOR FREE and I may put it in my second PC, which is ancient and is not meant to be upgraded. I only use it for productivity and low-end gaming when I'm not using the main one.
