Why would you OC?

Thread Starter
Not trying to start a fight but I'm just wondering at this point.

Why would you OC your i5 or i7? Isn't it already enough for most tasks? lol

I got an i3 and I was worried about it being slow, but I haven't seen it ever lag yet or hit a 100% CPU load. So is it just to say you have a OC or something? I know that is quite cool to say but still haha.

Not everyone plays games. Many people use their CPU for rendering, work, or Folding@Home.

Actually, even in games, overlocking does help.

hobby? Why do i collect stamps? why do i do exercise, it dont make me walk faster or live longer... Why do i collect coins? Why do ppl watch tv if it bring no benefits to them?
Benefits is not always the reason why we do things in life, sometime we do things for fun/passion/interrest/push our limits etc etc.
Try it out sometime.

More often than not (at least from what I've read and dealing with my own experience) overclocking is a hobby. In this sense people overclock not because they demand greater performance, although thats certainly a plus, but because there is something fun about it. I find myself benchmarking and stress testing more than anything else on my computer simply because I enjoy it.

My rig is pretty weak compared to most people here but overclocking what little I have has netted some nice performance gains for me. The added performance plus the fun I have OC'ing are the reasons I do it. So I imagine its the same with those who have top tier components. I'm sure they don't run into many hitches in games or whatever it is that they actually use their computers for but I bet they get a thrill when they can push their benchmark numbers that much further.

Long story short....its just fun! biggrin.gif

The reason I personally got a Core i5 2500k and Overclocked it to 4.8ghz was to get rid of CPU bottleneck in BF3 with my GTX590. At stock speeds of 3.3ghz it is insufficient to feed the GPU data fast enough making the video card not reach its full potential.

Before i was seeing 70% GPU usage and not so smooth gameplay, at 4.8ghz im seeing 99% gpu usage and butter smooth gameplay on bf3.

It's as simple as everything just runs faster. Even for gaming where most (probably not here:p) people think that the GPU does all the work you can still see a noticeable improvement having the CPU OC'd. I'd have to do a little digging but I read a great article that did side by side comparisons and pretty much every game they tested showed a marked increase in fps(objective) and general smoothness(subjective).

Also because it's fun. Well...to us nerdy types anyway.

Edit - ^ Capitan explained it much better. ^

One answer here. It can be found in more or less every thread in this site. It's also what this site stands for!

PERFORMANCE!!

Overclocking CPU improves a lot of things, especially games. Even with my CPU I see performance gains with a 4ghz OC.

The real question is why not overclock. It doesn't cost anything (If you already have good cooling) and it can make a difference in a lot of games and other programs even when you have an i5 or i7. Its also just cool to say that your processor is at 4GHz or what ever its at.
