When I do my computer upgrade in April I've been considering going with a 7970 instead of crossfiring my 6950. If I didn't have to buy a new PSU to do Crossfire this really wouldn't be a topic but considering the lower power pull of a 7970 and Ivybridge I figured I could use the same PSU if necessary. I might just buy a new PSU with the upgrade but in your minds does it justify the price increase considering a 6950 will probably be around 220ish dollars once price drops hit + 100$ roughly for a new PSU or just spending the extra cash on getting a 7970 and not having to deal with crossfire issues with arguably better performance. This is going to be paired with a high end Z77 board and a 3570k or 3770k depending on how the benches turn out.

honestly, I'd go with a single HD 7970.
better tessellation, 3GB VRAM, less heat, noise and power consumption.
plus remember multi card never scale 100%.

Go 7970, Multicard scaling is crap on AMD chips. I would get the 7970 then go pile driver to drive 2 of them in the future.

That still doesn't get rid of the bottleneck caused by the 955. Even the newest AMD cpus will still bottleneck, Browse the forums if you don't believe me.
Also yes CF scales better then SLI and is less demanding on the CPU. Get a single 7970 never worry about poor scaling.

This is going to be an Ivybridge build so I'm pretty sure i won't have to worry about bottle necking it, especially if it can hit 6ghz on a H100 equivalent. That's probably what I'm going to do considering there are non reference cards slated to have 1300+mhz core which I'm sure will out perform 6950's by a decent margin if they are stock.

What on earth makes you think that you will get 6ghz on an IB CPU with an air cooler/closed water loop? LOL?
