Planning new WC buid from scratch. [Purchased!]

Thread Starter
As the title states, I am planning on building a new water cooled rig. Originally, I was planning on using my Arc MIDI, but that just doesn't have the room I need for a proper setup for my SLI 570 GPUs and 4.8 GHz Sandy.

I just purchased a Lian Li PC-A70F and 5.25" bay power button. I will cut open the top (removing the stock power button in the process) to make room for an RX 480 Rad. I also am planning on using an MCP655-B pump. I'm planning on using four AP15 fans in pull config, and possibly 8 for push-pull in the future.

I'm not sure if the MCP655 B or non-B version is ideal, though. It seems as if the non-B is adjustable, but the B has an RPM monitor for safety. The B also only goes to 4/5 of the non-B. I can get the B version for 75 shipped on Sidewinder, though, which makes it very appealing.

For blocks, should I go with the Rasa CPU and GPU blocks? What about for reservoir? Ideally I'd want a Res in the 5.25 bays because that case will have tons of space.

As for fittings, barbs, water wetter, and all that other stuff, it's been over ten years since I set up a water cooling rig. Any and all advice here is sorely needed.

Thanks very very much in advance!

First off, sounds pretty sweet what you have planned! biggrin.gif
But what GPU's are they (brand) as it determines what full cover block you can use. (I notice that you said rasa GPU blocks, but then u'd have to get little heatsinks for the vram and stuff, and it doesnt look as sexy tongue.gif)
I currently have the gainward GTX570 GS with an EK GW 5x0 block and it works a treat!
Also using the EK Supreme HF, no complaints and getting great temp's. I think theres very little difference in temp's between raystorm and supreme hf, just the looks and $$ that are the main difference (could be wrong XD)
Oh yea, I dont really think that a quad rad would be enough for cpu and 2 gpu's with high OC's, better to have more rad then less.. and just on a curious note what are ure ambient air temperatures?
You could probably fit another 240rad in the front where the HDD bays are? not sure.

Fittings there are barbs or compression fittings, all depends on how much u want to spend/looks. Bitspower have the best compression fittings but are also the most expencive, their barbs are great too. If using 1/2 ID barbs with 1/2 ID tubing you will need some hose clamps to go with it, but if you use 1/2 ID barbs with 7/16th tubing you wont need hose clamps as u will need to warm up the tubing first before being able to put it in the barbs = crazy tight fit.

Coolant = expencive but sexy looking (depending what u get ofc tongue.gif) but can clog up certain components so it can be a pain in the ass, I've had quite a big build up using feser one so just watch out if you use coolants (I use it for the UV blue, and it was my first time so I was drawn to the "non conductive" aspect of it ,which is pretty bull**** anyways tongue.gif)

Distilled water = dirt cheap, clean looking and there are plenty of dyes out there, but you will need a anti microbial agent either PT nuke or 99.9% silver strip (kill coils) which are the 2 most popular choice. (i'd do this if I ever need new liquid). Not many people use water wetter nowadays, not sure if its necessary.

Tubing, many brands to chose from, I prefer Feser for their coloured tubing but I from my knowledge I believe Tygon is the best for clear. using 3/8'th or 1/2 " doenst make a difference in performance, if it does its minimal.

Resevoirs, many brands obviously and types of res's 2 main differences are bay resevoirs or tube resevoirs. probably best to do a mock up on paint to see what looks best.

Anyways, enjoy!

Thank you, TMM! This is very helpful.

My GPUs are the Asus DC2 variety, and are thus non reference, so I'd have to go the gpu-only route. Given that, are there any better GPU-only coolers? Also, with so many choices in CPU block, I'm now unsure if the Rasa CPU is the best for my buck.

Is there any general consensus on barbs vs compression for longevity, leakage, and aesthetics? I'm preliminarily thinking that barbs would look the best and perhaps offer the best reliability?

The pump will be 1/2" so that's probably the best size for me to use on everything, right? I assume that I can ask frozencpu to add 1/2" barbs to all the parts I buy?

Thank you again for all the help!

(I notice that you said rasa GPU blocks, but then u'd have to get little heatsinks for the vram and stuff, and it doesnt look as sexy tongue.gif)

Says who? I have them on my 460 and they look mighty sexy biggrin.gif I have some pics in the link in my sig.

I would stick with distilled water if you can because it causes the least amount of damage to the blocks plus if you can find colored tubing it will be much easier than trying to mix coolants and such.

I would try to use Tygon tubing if you have the money but personally I have Masterkleer tubing and it bends easily and has great look/flow rates. The wider the tubing the greater the water flow rates and possibly better cooling.

Reservoirs are quite cheap yet some are very expensive. Personally I have a single bay 5.25" reservoir in my rig and it looks great and does its job.

Fittings also vary greatly. Like he said, Bitspower is the best but it costs a little more than some. Barbs are easy and cheap but astetically they don't look as good. I'm using barbs currently but if I get the chance I will switch to compression fittings.

I use the MCP- 655 B and it works great with my 10 ft of tubing smile.gif I idle around 33C with both my 1100T and GTX 460 in the same loop with one 360mm radiator in the top.

I would definitely use a 480mm rad at least or use a 360 plus a 240 somewhere else in the case. I would say either 480mm of radiator or possibly 60mm of radiator space because of the 4.8Ghz and the 570 gpu.

Hope this helps a bit!

Barbs will work well but between barbs and compression fittings either would work great for your needs but compressions look better aesthetically.

As for the gpu block, since they aren't reference blocks you could go with the EK supreme High Flow universal block and have the vram heatsinks on there too. Some would say that it doesn't look as good but others don't really care because the gpu will be facing down. I would go with a backplate on the gpu because it helps keep the board rigid for support and looks so dang good. smile.gif I do have to aim a fan at the vram heatsinks because they will get extremely hot but if the fan is integrated well it won't be noticeable.

hehe, full blocks still look sexier imo biggrin.gif!
You might want to get a mod top for the 655 as you can use any fitting on it then, and looks alot sexier biggrin.gif
Any you will have to go gpu only blocks, im not sure on the best type, but i'd probably keep all my blocks the same brand if I were you, and most likely stay away from the EK nickle plated type (had some issues), so stick to copper, full copper or acetal.

btw what type of look are you going for? "clean"? or a coloured theme

And barbs/comp fittings, comp fittings are extremely reliable nowadays if you get a GOOD brand (i'd only get EK or Bitspower compression fittings), bitspower have a ridiculous range but also the highest prices tongue.gif.
If I was to do WC again i'd get 7/16 tubing with 1/2 barbs for super sleek/clean looks.

Wow. Thanks everyone for the advice. Juggalo23451, your guides are superb. Muffin and glinux, you guys are supremely helpful. Thank you again.

OK. So taking your advice into consideration, I have some refinements:

CPU Block: XSPC RayStorm. It seems to be a tad better than the EK Supreme HF, and a lot better than the Rasa. Plus, the price is definitely right. ($60)

2x GPU Blocks: XSPC Rasa GPU ($100)

Pump: Swiftech MCP655-B ($70) - I know a modified MCP355 with top performs a bit better in complex loops like mine, but I hear the reliability and noise on the 655 are significantly better. Plus, at 70, it's cheaper than a modded 355.

Reservoir: XSPC Single 5.25" Bay Res (Highly open to suggestions on other options) ($30)

Radiator: XSPC RX 480 ($115)

Fans: 8x Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 (8 x $15)

Fittings: 12x XSPC Compression (12 x $3.99) or 12x Bitspower Silver (12 x $6.99)

Tubing: 20 feet (to be safe and have room for experimentation) x Tygon Silver Antimicrobial Tubing (1/2" ID, 3/4" OD) (20 x $3.45)

BGA Ramsinks for GPUs: 3x Enzotech Forged Copper Ramsinks (set of 8) (3 x $13.50)

Tube Cutter: DD Premium Tube Cutter ($10)

Questions
I assume since I am using silver tubing that I don't need anything other than the distilled / deionized water right? No need for the silver strips in the res / tubing, or any anti-microbial, right?

Are the Bitspower compression fittings really worth the price difference over the XSPC model (almost double)? Both are for 1/2 ID, 3/4 OD, and XSPC isn't a generic brand... If it's essential, though, I'll go with better fittings, or perhaps just do barbs.

Update
I ordered the pump because I didn't want to miss out on the sale, which doesn't say when it's ending. I would hopefully like to order the rest of the stuff today as well, pending the approval of the forum wizards. smile.gif

I also bought the 8 x AP-15s at just $15 each. Epic price. Let's hope Aquatuning.us is not a scam. I've used the other sites... but never Aquatuning.

I would get a kill coil 99% silver and put it in the res if you are using just distilled water. I use it in mine and its nice and clean smile.gif

Thanks. So you think that's still useful even though I'm using silver Tygon tubes?
