Water cooling vs Zalman 9500?

post #1 of 7

Does the Thermaltake Silent Water Cooling system from http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-silentwater-lcs.html beat the Zalman 9500 that I currently have? I have my E6400 at 2.93 ghz standard v, and I get idle temps of 51 and 75 degrees under full load in two instances of orthos or prime 95. I'm also positive that I correctly installed my HS. Thanks.

That kit is useless. Air would be better. What are you using to figure you are 75°c at 100%?

I use the Gigabyte Easy Tune 5, Speedfan, TAT, and coretemp. Coretemp and TAT reports the highest, at 51 idle and 75 stressed, by the gigabyte tuner and speedfan report 39 idle 65 full load.

You might want to re-check. Those temps are too high for that Zalman. I have the same cooler on an E6600 running at 3.34GHz with a slight overvolt, and my load temps (prime) stay below 60C (measured with Core Temp).

Make sure airflow in the case is good. Also, which and how much thermal paste did you apply. You'll only need a small amount of thermal past, the size of a grain of rice.

Hi Lordbaron;

I cant give you any info on the comparison of the thermaltake vs cnps, that being said, i just replaced my cnps with a swiftech h20-120 and have seen a drop in load temps of 12c, AFTER I upped the voltage from 1.375 to 1.435 and upped the oc from 2.6-2.8! While the zalman is a nice air cooler, i think it pales in comparison to most watercooling kits, just stay away from thermaltake's lower end kits!

You can check my review for the swiftech h20-120 at the link below.

Hey chozart, im kind off-topic here but i couldn't send pm. Im overclocking an e6600 too (following this guide), but about the thermal paste you mention, isn't it "the more the better"? You apply much -not TOO much- and cover uniformly all the chip, the attack the waterblock (or fan base)... the thermalpaste (Arctic Cool) will become solid after 8 or so days.

On topic, i have Zalman 9500 too now, on an P4 650 (3.41GHz), it's a nice fan but no fan can come up with a watercooling setup, especially in overclocked systems. That's why im jumping to wc myself - one more reason for me is the noise levels, but i guess you're not referring to this-.
