Water cooling loop (oil instead of water) ?

post #1 of 54
Thread Starter
ok i had a thought a few nights back

i liked the look of some of those submersion cooled computers using mineral oil ( BABY OIL )

so i had an idea but cant test it so just wondered if any one has did this or planes to test it

my idea ( if i had the funds )
building a custom WC loop but using mineral oil instead of water ( would probably require a more powerful pump )

would that work as the oil is supposed to conduct heat more efficiently than Air/Water but wont disburse it as easily as water

link to some oil cooled rigs
http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

http://www.google.com/search?q=oil+cooled+pc&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=f8YFT7SKJYn1-gaJo63KAQ&ved=0CEMQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=581&sei=ocYFT4mbH83O-Qbk1cHECQ

Or even using sub zero temps using oil cooling in the custom loop and using nitrogen helium to cool the radiator for benching IE less risk of having condensation dripping on components

Oil in the tubing would work no better than simple distilled water, likely far worse. The reason it works for submersion, is the lack of conductivity thumb.gif

Not sure using oil in loops designed for water would do the pumps any favors.

Restrictive waterblocks or res's would also be of concern.

Too thick. It's like trying to throw 15w-40 in a 5w-20 engine. It'll gurgle and stall. Your pump would burn out really fast too.

I believe rads would have a harder time removing the heat also.

You probably wont' be able to find a pump that could handle it, and oil can't dissipate heath worth a poo.

Scroll down a bit...

Oil = 0.138
Water = 0.6
Mercury = 8.3

If you wish to go out of the ordinary, mercury would be the way to go. Mineral oil has five time less thermal conductance than heat.

Hrmmm, mercury....
