does 3.5 mm give you 5.1 surround sound? - Page 2

The Toslink (optical) adapter WILL give you 5.1 surround sound, but only for Movies (and possibly games) encoded in DD 5.1. Otherwise you will get 2ch PCM the rest of the time.
I just recently had the same dilemma when trying to hook up my Xtremegamer to my 5.1 reciever, and started my own thread here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1193077/help-on-how-to-hook-up-xtremegamer-to-home-reciever/0_50

Hope this helps.

Just about ALL 5.1 speakers for the PC have 3 .. 3.5mm connectors, to plug into 3 jacks on the sound card.
Can you provide a link to the speakers on the manufacturers website, and also link the manufacturer specs of the sound card?

this is the speakers : http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&partNumber=DAVHDX589W

I have 2 audio card and the motherboard can also have 5.1 sound
here's is one i'm using on the computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829126005
And the other is Xonar DX.

no guys, my receiver doesn't have any 3.5 mm but optical and HDMI inputs. So what do I have to use to get 5.1 from my computer ( which is xonar DX audio card) to connect to the receiver (link) to get 5.1.

Use your video card's HDMI output?

Not quite sure about the cable though. so you need to research that part a bit more.

The standard 3.5mm jack will not. But if you are using a SPDIF cable which is TOSLINK, then the sound card sends out 5.1 in compressed form through that cable. Your receiver will then decompress the audio signal into 5.1.

The standard front audio 3.5mm jack at the back of the card will not compress the audio stream. This is why we have SPDIF. If you wanted 5.1 in loseless format (not compressed) then you would have to use HDMI but I don't think you care about that.

Cheers.

Um it's incredibly easy to set up. Did you try to like, set hdmi as default device?...

Optical and 3.5mm would both be inferior to hdmi sound.
