Want to build my own again...Need your help. - Page 2

Some good deals came out in the last few days that could make this build more affordable. Going with some of the above suggestions:

Case: CM 690 Advanced II - Great case, good looking, works for air and water cooling. 600T is a good case, but at 170, the difference ($75) would be better spent on a GPU or SSD.

Motherboard –Crosshair mobo are SUPER nice, but you should really only get one for hard overclocking/3 graphics cards etc. Once again, the money would be better spend on a better GPU or SSD. p67 sabertooth is a great choice as others have said, as well as other asus and gigabyte boards, like the UD3.

GPU – A 6950 is a great choice for what you want to do, getting one that will unlock will be even better. Ones that are the reference design (look like this and have the "AMD" logo right above the PCIE connectors. XFX GPUs come with lifetime warranty (that will be transferred to you if you are the second owner) Other good brands are MSI and Asus.

PSU – a 650 watt, like the HX 650 will be a great compliment to your rig. If you are planning to go for crossfire at any point in the near future, get a 750 though. It will be much cheaper to get a bigger PSU now than to sell your 650 and get a bigger one later. Corsiar PSUs are 15% off at newegg till jan 8th!

CPU – As others said, if you are doing anything over low end gaming, spring for the 2500K, it is a beast for gaming and should compliment your editing and CAD nicely. AMD just cant cut it (and I am an AMD owner). If there is a microcenter near you, they have the deal again where you get 50 dollars off a p67 or z68 motherboard when you buy a 2500k or 2600k. Makes it a steal to upgrade!

SSD – The crucial M4 is a GREAT SSD and will smoke on 6gb/s SATA. 64 GB will be enough for OS, most all your programs (depending on how many obviously) and even a game or two. I have a 60GB with most programs and i still have half free.

RAM – Cant comment on the difference between 1600 and 2133 ram, but Gskill is a great company, I would stick with them if at all possible.

HD - Try to find a used one in the FS section to save cash. A 1TB SATA 3 CAviar black is like 240 right now, craziness. Otherise recertified or similar is good route.

MONITOR – Asus makes good monitors and they have a wide variety, Dell makes good adjustable ones.

CD/DVD/BD – Not up to date on these, go with whatever has good reviews.

Heatsink – I have honestly only heard of a handful of cases where all ino one liquid cooling units have leaked. ALL of them had all their damaged hardware replaced at no cost by Corsair. I would go with H40 or H80. They are the price of a good air cooler anyway, and more compact.

Hope this helps marte, good luck with the build! thumb.gif

^^ Thank you for the heads up about the Microcenter 2500k deal. thumb.gif I picked one up during my lunch hour. I also picked up the Sabertooth P67 because they had a $50 off mobo when you buy a compatible CPU. cheers.gif so I guess this is the route I'm taking - $330 + tax for the pair was a good deal to me. Does this mean this thread should now be in Intel?? thinking.gif

Lol I hate going to stores though cause I always get suckered in by good costumer service... The guy sold me on their $20 replacement plan for the motherboard if "anything happens" they replace it within 2 years. I always decline these because in my experience stores always seem to have an excuse. Anyway I got it because the sales guy was knowledgeable, super helpful and I got a much better deal than I expected.

I also picked up the CM hyper 212+ at frys for $25. I will decide on the rest of the items and probably order from Newegg this weekend. Thank you all for your help, I really appriciate!

Edit: I forgot to reload the page before I posted Thank you FOXX thumb.gif

If I had to choose between these two 6950 which would you guys go with?

HIS IceQ X Turbo - Very good reviews

Or

XFX Double D HD-695X-CDFC - Cheaper with a rebate but from the reviews it sounds like the possibility of not getting it is high.

Or

Which 6950 would you guys go with in the mid $200s that is in stock right now? (SAPPHIRE toxic not in stock mad.gif)

Yea, as far as I know there are no more new TOXIC's in store's in the state's, over sea's they have them....such a shame.

The HIS looks to be pretty good. Another good card in the same price range is the Sapphire Dirt 3 6950.

Here is what I went with...I would have built it by now but Newegg sent me a $30 case instead of the $160 Corsair 600T mad.gif Maybe they were trying to tell me I spent too much on the case.

I received everything last Tuesday, RMA and sent back case Wednesday so hopefully I will receive the correct case sometime this week.
