Everything but the RAM

Thread Starter
So the last of my parts arrived today (except the RAM. Never gonna ship anything EggSaver again, been sitting in NJ since 12/30, just departed shipping partner facility this morning mad.gif )

So this leads to a two part question.

First, would it be feasible/worthwhile to put everything together except the RAM, and then just toss the RAM in when it comes? I'm as giddy as a kid in a candy store with mom's credit card (This is my first build, always been a software guy instead of hardware) and my thought is that this way when my RAM does come it should be a simple, toss RAM in, boot, install OS, download/update drivers etc, OC, start using my new computer fairly quickly after getting the RAM. Otherwise if I wait, it would probably take a couple hours for the build, then all of the above mentioned steps and I probably wouldn't be able to use the computer until the next day at least.

Second question, what is the standard/simplest order to install components? I've read a few different guides online and they all seem to recommend a different order. Some install the PSU first, others the MoBo. Some install video card and RAM while the mobo is out of the case, others install them after screwing the mobo into the case. Some install the CPU cooler first and then the RAM, others install the RAM then the cooler, etc. I'm sure all methods work, but as a matter of simplicity for a first time builder, what would the OCN community recommend?

I would suggest you assemble it now, then just pop the RAM in when it arrives tomorrow.

If it was me, I would do something like
  • Hard drive + optical drive
  • Power supply
  • Put CPU and CPU cooler in motherboard
  • Motherboard into case
  • Graphics card
  • Connect all wires to motherboard
  • RAM (tomorrow)

Of course other people will have other opinions, but that's just how I'd probably do it.
